Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- David Wesley led the Charlotte Hornets to a rare victory in Orlando.

Wesley matched a season high with 30 points and P.J. Brown added 19 and 10 rebounds as the Hornets posted their third straight victory, 96-90 over the Magic.

Wesley scored 23 points spanning the second and third quarters, helping the Hornets build a 76-61 cushion entering the final period. He hit 10-of-17 from the floor, drained 8-of-11 free throws and added four steals to lead Charlotte to only its third win in its last 13 trips to Orlando.

"Any given night, anyone can lead this team in scoring because of the way the offense is run," Wesley said. "The hot hand will continue get his opportunities to put the ball in the basket."

"David has got it all together now, the whole package," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "He's penetrating to the hoop, he's shooting jumpers -- whatever is needed, he's providing."

The Magic drew within 83-78 with 4:50 left on a 3-pointer by Darrell Armstrong, who scored all 18 of his points in the second half. But Brown scored the Hornets' next six points and Orlando managed only a free throw during the stretch as Charlotte took an 89-79 with 1:58 left.

Orlando's fortunes in the early going have revolved around the success of Tracy McGrady, who scored 14 points. He is averaging 31.5 points in two wins in which he has played but only 15.3 in the Magic's three losses. The 6-8 swingman missed one game due to suspension.

"It's definitely a learning process," McGrady said. "I'm in a new system now and receiving a lot more double-teams because I'm the go-to guy and they figure if they get the ball out of my hands, they've got a chance of beating us."

McGrady will continue to be the focal point of the opposition's defensive game plan until Grant Hill returns to action. The All-Star forward is experiencing soreness in his surgically repaired left ankle and will sidelined at least two weeks.

Derrick Coleman scored five points in 13 minutes for Charlotte in his season debut. The 6-10 forward missed most of the preseason and the first four games while acclimating himself to new medication for an irregular heartbeat.

Wesley scored only two points in the first quarter and the Hornets coughed up the ball seven times as Orlando built a 27-23 lead.

The Magic pushed the lead to nine at the 7:19 mark but Wesley began to find the range, scoring 10 points as part of a 19-4 surge that put Charlotte on top 45-39 with 1:24 left. Hornets rookie Jamaal Magloire added six points during the run as Charlotte took a 50-44 lead at the half.

"I'm starting to get a little more comfortable as the games go on," said Magloire, who collected 10 points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes. "I'm trying to do as much as I can with the time I get."

Orlando drew within 52-51 early in the third but Wesley scored five points as part of an 11-0 run that provided a 12-point cushion midway through the session. He had 13 in the period to help Charlotte build a 15-point advantage after three quarters.

"I think our effort and energy is not where it should be all the time," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "I'm not really worried about the offense but we have to be a great effort team to win basketball games."

Baron Davis scored 13 points and Elden Campbell added 10 and 11 rebounds for Charlotte, which shot 40 percent (29-of-73) from the floor but hit 32-of-47 free throws.

Bo Outlaw made 7-of-9 shots and collected a season-high 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Magic, who shot 38 percent (31-of-82) overall, 9-of-19 from the arc and 19-of-29 from the line.
