Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse scored 29 points and Chucky Atkins added a career-high 26 as the Detroit Pistons snapped a four-game losing streak with a 108-94 victory over the New Jersey Nets, who remained winless at home.

Stackhouse, who entered the night fourth in the NBA in scoring with 27.8 points per game, connected on 10-of-25 shots and seemed to ward off every New Jersey rally with a long jump shot or thunderous driving dunk.

"Jerry was great," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "Even though I think he was probably a little tired, he knew they were going to be coming at him and he saw the mismatches. They had to put (rookie) Kenyon Martin on him. And he tried to find people and he did a terrific job."

Atkins, who established his previous career high with 24 points at Philadelphia on Wednesday, made 10-of-20 shots, including 4-of-8 3-pointers.

"He's doing a very good job. He's gaining more confidence to make some offensive moves," Irvine said. "He knows he's going to get more and more minutes every night and we don't put any pressure on him to score."

Atkins' first 3-pointer capped an opening 11-0 run and Detroit did not trail thereafter, coasting to its 16th win in 20 meetings with New Jersey and first triumph since upending Toronto on opening night. Stackhouse scored a career-high 44 points in that contest.

Stephon Marbury had 32 points and 11 assists for New Jersey, which slipped to 0-3 at home. The Nets and Pistons are a combined 4-0 on the road this season and Detroit lost its lone home game on Friday against Sacramento.

The sparse crowd of 10,000 at Continental Airlines Arena was taken out of the game early. Ben Wallace opened the scoring with an 11-footer, Eric Montross made a layup and seven-foot hook, Stackhouse knocked down a short jumper and Atkins connected from 26 feet, making it 11-0 with 7:40 remaining in the first quarter.

"I thought everybody came out with the same effort as we had in the second half of last night (vs. Philadelphia)," Stackhouse said. "We came out today, started making shots and got our confidence up. Eric and the rest of the guys really came out to play tonight."

"I was pleased with our effort right from the start," Irvine said.

Detroit held a 26-17 lead after one period and led 48-40 at the half. New Jersey began to chip away in the third quarter and got within two points on three occasions before Stackhouse and Atkins again took control.

Aaron Williams made a 14-footer to shave the deficit to 62-60 with 5:38 left in the third quarter. But Atkins hit a 3-pointer and Stackhouse followed with two free throws, sparking a 24-8 run to close the period.

Stackhouse had 10 points during the extended run and finished the third quarter with a flourish, hitting two free throws to go with a driving dunk and a layup as Detroit opened an 84-70 cushion entering the final 12 minutes. New Jersey did not threaten thereafter.

The Nets were without shooting guard Kendall Gill due to right knee tendinitis.

Montross had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Jerome Williams added 10 and 12 off the bench for Detroit, which shot 49 percent (41-of-84) and held a 49-37 advantage on the glass.

"This year, I feel like I can contribute in a lot of ways and I'm getting more confident on the court," Montross said.

Marbury, who has scored 30 or more points in each of his last four games, was 13-of-28 from the field in 40 minutes. Rookie Stephen Jackson scored 15 points, Williams added 12 and Martin added 11 for the Nets, who shot 42 percent (38-of-90).

"I missed a lot of shots," said Williams, who was 5-of-14 from the floor. "Easy shots I normally make. I thought we came out in the second half with extra energy, got the lead down to like two or so and they just raised the level of their game and we didn't match it."

The Nets allowed 18 second-chance points while collecting just four as Detroit consistently beat New Jersey to loose balls and long offensive rebounds.

"Anytime somebody jumps out on you 11-0, you weren't ready to play," Jackson said. "Especially at home."
