Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Clippers showed the Atlanta Hawks that the days of freebie wins in Los Angeles are over.

The Hawks came to the Staples Center looking for their first victory of the season but were dealt a 115-106 defeat as Jeff McInnis led the youthfully exuberant Clippers with a career-high 28 points.

Lamar Odom added 25 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists and Tyrone Nesby contributed 17 for the Clippers, who secured their second win of the season.

"We've got a real good all-around team," Odom said. "Everyone likes to rebound, play defense."

Jimmy Jackson scored a season-high 34 while Alan Henderson and Chris Crawford collected 14 apiece for the Hawks, who extended their season-opening losing streak to seven games. The NBA's lone winless team is off to its worst start since moving to Atlanta prior to the 1968-69 season.

"(The Clippers) were ready to play," Jackson said. "We had the lead and they came back and took control. That showed us that they came out to play."

"We have a lot of work to do but we are going to make every effort to get better and progress," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said.

Dikembe Mutombo had just four points and six rebounds for Atlanta in his second contest after missing the first five games with a mild case of malaria.

The talanted but inexperienced Clippers, who have enjoyed leads in the second half of their last two games only to see them go to waste in the fourth quarter, used a 21-0 run that spanned the second and third periods to take control.

"They ended the first half and started the second half hot," Kruger said. "That gave them a big confidence boost and it helped them pull out the game."

Los Angeles closed the first half with a 10-0 burst and erased an eight-point halftime deficit by scoring the first 11 points of the third quarter.

"The run we made before the half turned everything around and we kept the momentum going from there," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We did a much better job of moving the ball. The third quarter we played really good defense."

Nesby's 3-pointer with 9:03 to play in the quarter gave the Clippers a 61-58 lead. Another long-range jumper from Nesby put Los Angeles ahead by six points with 6:33 remaining. However, Atlanta scored 11 of the next 15 points, taking a 74-73 lead on two free throws by Jackson with 2:11 left.

But the Clippers did not collapse, scoring seven straight points and taking an 82-76 advantage into the fourth quarter, when rookie Keyon Dooling scored eight of his 10 points in the first eight minutes and Odom tallied eight in the last five.

Los Angeles took its largest lead, 97-85, with 6:49 left on rookie Quentin Richardson's 3-pointer. The Hawks pulled within 108-102 as Jackson converted two free throws but Odom drained a 3-pointer and, after Jason Terry's running jump shot, McInnis stole the ball from Jackson and made two free throws.

"I felt I was in a rhythm and our team just fed off that," McInnis said. "We had other guys pick it up and we started rolling. We stuck with our game plan."

Michael Olowokandi blocked Henderson's shot and McInnis dunked to give the Clippers a 115-104 lead with 23 seconds remaining.

Los Angeles rookie Keyon Dooling chipped in 12 points off the bench. He provided one of the game's best highlights, dunking over Mutombo with 3:18 left and wagging his finger at the 7-2 center. But Dooling was given a technical for hanging on the rim.

Olowokandi finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots for the Clippers, who shot 58.9 percent (43-for-73) from the field and 20-for-25 (80 percent) from the free-throw line.

"We shot the ball well and did a great job on defense," McInnis said. "We wanted to stick with our game plan and we were able to do what we needed to."

DerMarr Johnson scored 12 points and Terry added 10 for Atlanta, which shot 52.9 percent (37-for-70) but was outscored, 44-28, in the paint.
