Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors have returned to form.

The Cavaliers unceremoniously dropped from the unbeaten ranks with a 115-88 loss to the Raptors, who got 32 points from Vince Carter in their third straight victory.

After revamping their roster in the offseason, the Cavaliers (4-1) won their first four games by a total of 10 points and were the biggest surprise of the young NBA season.

However, tonight they looked very much like the team that lost 50 games last season. Cleveland never led and trailed by as many as 32 points.

"Toronto gave us a good whupping," Cavaliers coach Randy Wittman said. "Let's see how we bounce back."

"This is the first game this year that we didn't put out energy at the defensive end and you can see what happens," Cavs forward Matt Harpring said.

Meanwhile, the Raptors (3-3) have rebounded from an 0-3 start, winning three in a row at home by a combined 64 points. They shot 54 percent (45-of-84) and held a 49-34 rebounding edge.

Carter made 13-of-19 shots and led an attack that featured six players in double figures. Mark Jackson scored 17 points and Antonio Davis added 15 as the Raptors beat the Cavs for the fifth straight time.

"We have to be very satisfied playing against a team that's been playing well," Jackson said.

"We've got to put tonight behind us and learn from our mistakes," Cavs forward Chris Gatling said. "Toronto is still athletic (compared to last season) and now they have a point guard (Jackson). I think they're bigger and deeper inside."

Toronto bolted to an early 8-2 lead and opened a 27-21 advantage after one quarter. Corliss Williamson scored eight of his 12 points and Jackson added seven in the period.

"I'm very happy with how aggressive we came out," said Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens, who coached Cleveland from 1986-93. "It helps us defensively and it spills over offensively."

Jackson stayed hot as he opened the second quarter with a pair of 3-pointers. He added a technical foul shot before a free throw by rookie Morris Peterson made it 35-23 with 9:38 left in the first half.

The Raptors extended their lead to 55-38 at halftime and blew it open in the third quarter. A 3-pointer by Charles Oakley capped a 16-4 burst that began late in the second period and opened a 62-42 bulge with 9:22 left.

"When we get offense from all five guys, they can't just worry about me and that makes it fun for me," Carter said.

Carter's 3-pointer ended the third quarter and gave Toronto a 93-63 lead. He scored 10 points in the first six minutes of the final period, then took a deserved rest on the bench.

"Toronto shot well and Vince was Vince -- invincible," Gatling said. "We try and get back in the game and Vince would hit a three."

Oakley and Peterson scored 11 points each. Oakley grabbed 11 rebounds and Davis pulled down 10 as Toronto manhandled the front line of Cleveland. Forwards Lamond Murray and Clarence Weatherspoon and center Zydrunas Ilgauskas combined for eight points on 4-of-19 shooting.

"Cleveland has some talent," said Oakley, a Cleveland native. "They were 4-0 but tonight was our night. The last two games have been a gut check for us and we responded."

Gatling scored 17 points off the bench for the Cavs, who shot 45 percent (40-of-89).
