Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller typically heated up in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 of his 24 points as the Indiana Pacers pulled away for their fourth straight victory, 94-84 over the Detroit Pistons.

Miller shot an uncharacteristic 4-of-13 over the first three periods but knocked down 5-of-7 shots in the fourth quarter, when the Pacers closed with a 26-8 run.

Miller's first points in the fourth came on a 3-pointer that pulled the Pacers within 82-81 with 6:50 to play. The lead changed hands 17 times before Miller put Indiana ahead for good, 83-82, when he hit a 20-footer with 6:14 to go.

"We easily could have hung our heads when we got down by eight, but the style of play that Detroit has allows you to get back in the ballgame," Miller said. "You just have to come up with the stops and of course convert at the other end, and we did exactly that."

Jermaine O'Neal had 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for the Pacers, who have won four straight games after opening the season with consecutive losses. Travis Best directed Indiana's offense efficiently, scoring 19 points and handing out nine assists while committing just two turnovers.

"I think we know how to win," Best said. "And we will continue to improve as the year goes on. We were down and able to come back from a seven-point deficit when they felt they had us on a run. We throw a whole lot of people at teams and they don't know what to expect."

Chucky Atkins scored 18 points and Jerry Stackhouse added 18 on just 6-of-21 shooting as Detroit lost for the fourth time in five games. Jerome Williams contributed 12 points and 17 rebounds off the bench for the Pistons, who have lost four straight meetings with the Pacers.

"We had our chances," Stackhouse said. "We had a good opportunity and let it slip away. Reggie hit some big shots and we should have never been put in that situation. Because they played last night and we were the rested team and we just let it get away."

Detroit's offense disappeared for a 4:53 span in the fourth period. The Pistons missed seven straight shots from the field as well as a pair of free throws and turned the ball over four times before Atkins ended the drought with a jumper from the right corner to cut Indiana's lead to 92-84 with 2:11 left.

"They made shots. They had good looks and made them," Atkins said. "They had some good penetration and created for their shooters. We were not aggressive on defense."

Detroit scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter, taking a 76-68 lead on Jud Buechler's 3-pointer with 9:40 to play. But Jonathan Bender answered with a 3-pointer from the left corner to ignite Indiana's game-closing run.

Best followed Bender's basket with another 3-pointer to pull the Pacers within 76-74 with 8:50 remaining. Just 25 seconds later, O'Neal made a four-footer to tie the score. Atkins and Best exchanged baskets before Detroit regained the lead on John Wallace's 10-footer with 7:34 left.
