Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Allan Houston scored 21 points, but the Charlotte Hornets' second-half collapse was the key to victory for the New York Knicks.

The Hornets tied an NBA record with 19 second-half points and Houston outscored them by himself in the third quarter as the shorthanded Knicks pulled away for an easy 81-67 victory.

Charlotte followed up a strong second quarter with one of the worst periods in NBA history, scoring just seven points in the third on 1-of-16 shooting from the field.

Houston scored nine points in the session as New York took advantage of Charlotte's futility to extend a one-point halftime lead to 68-55 entering the final period.

The Hornets were only slightly better in the fourth quarter and ended up shooting just 18 percent (6-of-34) after intermission.

The woeful performance tied the NBA mark for the lowest point total in a half, set by Miami at Orlando on March 26 of last season.

"I wasn't happy with any performance we had tonight, offensively or defensively. I don't know why we were flat," Hornets coach Paul Silas said.

"For the fourth game in five nights, that was the most ready I've seen the guys in a long time," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "I really liked how we started out the third quarter."

Jamal Mashburn had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Charlotte, which has lost seven straight visits to Madison Square Garden.

Mashburn accounted for the Hornets' lone third-quarter bucket at the 8:17 mark. Charlotte missed its last 11 shots in the session, scoring five points from the foul line.

"We are going to miss some shots. Nobody is concerned with that, we just have to play on the other end of the court," Mashburn said. "You're going to make or miss shots any given night. You just need to be consistent on defense."

Despite their shooting difficulties, the Hornets trailed by just six midway through the period until Houston scored seven points as part of a 9-0 run that gave New York a 68-53 advantage with two minutes left.

"Whenever we play like we did tonight, it's because of our defense," Houston said. "We really made up our mind that we wanted to win the game. We didn't make many mistakes and we didn't shoot ourselves in the foot."

Charlotte missed its first four shots in the final period until Eddie Robinson snapped the 0-for-15 drought with a layup with 9:11 left.

The Hornets did not score again until Baron Davis' layup with 4:45 to play. By that time, New York had the game well in hand, leading 74-60.

"We had a terrible shooting night and we had no intensity," Davis said. "We came out flat in the third quarter. Offensively, we were lethargic."

The Hornets erased a 31-17 deficit after 12 minutes by nailing 12-of-23 shots in the second quarter to pull within 49-48 at halftime. But Charlotte converted only half that number in the final 24 minutes to cap one of the worst offensive efforts in recent years.

Larry Johnson scored 15 points and Kurt Thomas added 12 for New York, which was without swingman Latrell Sprewell (back) and guard Chris Childs (hamstring).

Davis had 15 points and nine assists for Charlotte, which shot 33 percent (25-of-76) and hit 13-of-21 free throws.
