Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Shawn Marion's baseline layup with 2.1 seconds remaining gave the Phoenix Suns their sixth straight win, an 84-82 victory over the Miami Heat.

The teams had traded empty possessions before Cliff Robinson got the ball above the foul line and drove left. As the defense converged on Robinson, Marion glided along the left baseline, took a pass from Robinson and soared for the go-ahead basket.

"I just made a good cut, and Cliff fed the ball to me. Simple as that," said Marion, who also had 13 rebounds.

"(Robinson) made a nice play," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "I thought he was going to pull up for a three. It was a smart play. He drove in and looked to make some contact."

The Heat had one last chance, but Tim Hardaway, who scored 19 points, missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"I was right there," said Hardaway, who has made a handful of improbable buzzer-beaters in his career. "I should've made that. I had a good look. It should have gone in. Normally, I make those shots."

"We just took away everything," Marion said. "He's lucky he got a shot off. He missed it."

Marion scored 18 points and Robinson added 15 for the Suns, who have not lost since opening night at Golden State and have the best record in the powerful Western Conference. Jason Kidd had 15 points and 13 assists.

Anthony Mason scored 18 points and Brian Grant added 14 and 11 rebounds for the Heat, who have lost four of five in the series overall and have not won in Phoenix since November 24, 1996.

"That's a tough one to lose," said Heat coach Pat Riley, whose team won at Utah on Friday night. "You go on the road against the two best teams in the West right now, win at Utah and take this right down to the possibility of a win. I'm proud of the effort. They played and bounced back and played with energy."

Miami bounced back twice in this game, each time with 10-0 runs at the outset of a quarter.

After Robinson scored 11 points to help Phoenix race to 26-15 after one period -- the sixth straight time it has led after the first quarter -- Miami opened the second period with 10 straight points, the last four by Mason, to get within a point.

The Suns rebuilt the lead to 45-34 at halftime and the Heat came storming back again. This time, Bruce Bowen made two 3-pointers in the spurt and Miami did not stop there. The Heat took the lead at 52-51 with 5:30 remaining on a layup by Mason that was part of a 14-2 run.

Hardaway scored 11 points in the third period, which ended with Miami holding a 65-61 lead.

"It was ugly at times," Skiles said. "They make it very difficult. We came out in the third quarter flat again and allowed them back into the game. The encouraging thing is we fought back and made big plays."

Marion's basket was the only one in the last 3:45. Kidd's two free throws gave Phoenix an 80-79 lead with 2:50 remaining and Hardaway answered with one to tie it. Tony Delk and Grant each made two from the line, setting up the final moments.

Delk scored 14 points and Rodney Rogers added 12 for the Suns, who shot 41 percent (33-of-80) from the field but committed 22 turnovers.

Bowen scored nine points but Eddie Jones managed just seven on 3-of-15 shooting for the Heat, who shot 38 percent (28-of-73) and were outrebounded, 47-34.

"We were outrebounded by 18 in the first half," Riley said. "We had 19 turnovers. We shoot 38 percent and we get beat at the buzzer. There's an intangible here that is great. I think the players have to understand that."
