Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Giving up 16 straight points in the fourth quarter is usually not the way to win, but it worked for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Kevin Garnett had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Anthony Peeler added 22 points as the Timberwolves nearly blew a 17-point lead before hanging on for a 92-90 victory over the slumping Golden State Warriors.

"We were just trying to give people their money's worth," Garnett said. "A win is a win. We got lackadaisical, lost our focus down the stretch. We stopped being aggressive, and that is what got us the lead in the first place."

Peeler, who hit 9-of-11 shots from the floor, sank a 3-pointer from the right corner to give Minnesota an 89-72 advantage with 3:48 left. Then the Wolves suddenly became inept, committing five turnovers and missing four straight shots from the field as the Warriors went on a 16-0 tear.

"The only way they could have won it was, they needed the last five possessions, and fortunately for us they only got four," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We played a little out of character tonight. A couple times we tried to make too many passes. But we're not going to make 23 turnovers all the time. We're actually leading the league as far as fewest turnovers."

Larry Hughes scored eight of his 22 points in Golden State's run. He opened the burst with two free throws with 3:42 to play and had an assist on Antawn Jamison's three-point play that capped it and pulled the Warrriors within 89-88 with 17 seconds left.

Chauncey Billups, who missed a layup and a follow shot just before Jamison's three-point play, made two foul shots to end Minnesota's drought with 15 seconds remaining.

Jamison made two free throws to trim Minnesota's lead to 91-90 with 11 seconds left and Garnett made one free throw with 6.7 seconds remaining to make it 92-90.

The Warriors had a chance to tie or win, but Wally Szczerbiak cut off the baseline off and forced Mookie Blaylock to shoot an airball that was grabbed by Garnett as time expired.

"They threw a little pressure at us and we really didn't react too well," Blaylock said. "They created a couple of turnovers, but we didn't quit. We came back, kind of in desperation, and Larry made some great steals. We had a chance to win."

Hughes made 8-of-19 shots, grabbed eight rebounds, handed out six assists and had seven steals.

"We started pressuring them," Hughes said. "They went to that halfcourt trap on us, and it rattled us a little bit. We then got active and were able to get some steals and come back a little bit."

Blaylock scored 19 points and Chris Mullin added 16 off the bench for the Warriors, who have lost seven straight games.

Blaylock, Mullin and Hughes each tallied 12 points in the first half when the Warriors held a 52-50 edge.

Billups, who had just four points in the first half, scored seven as Minnesota closed the third period with a 15-2 run to grab a 73-64 lead.
