Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Antonio McDyess had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Keon Clark added 16 and eight as the Denver Nuggets built a big lead and held on for an 89-85 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

McDyess had 13 points and eight boards in the first half, when Denver shot 56 percent (18-of-32) from the field and held a 52-35 lead. McDyess made 6-of-14 shots before fouling out with just under four minutes remaining. Clark scored eight points in the fourth quarter, helping the Nuggets fight off the Bulls.

"I'm frustrated, I felt like I let the team down," McDyess said. "Thankfully Keon stepped up and made big plays. We can never hold onto a lead. We're up by 20 then down one in a blink of an eye."

Chicago closed to 84-81 when rookie Dragan Tarlac made a layup with 2:32 remaining. Tarlac was fouled on the layup but missed the free throw. The Bulls received another chance when Mark Strickland was called for a loose ball foul on the rebound and Elton Brand made 1-of-2 free throws to cut the deficit to 84-82.

After a turnover by George McCloud, the Bulls had two chances to tie. But McCloud blocked a shot by Ron Mercer with 1:06 left and Clark swatted rookie A.J. Guyton's running jumper with 26 seconds to go.

Nick Van Exel, who had 15 points and six assists, made two free throws to give the Nuggets an 86-82 lead with 22 seconds left.

"We pulled it out. A win is a win," Van Exel said. "We have a lot of talent but we haven't played 48 minutes all season. We've got to come out and play like we're playing the world champion Lakers because we're not good enough to take anyone for granted."

Fred Hoiberg made a 3-pointer to pull the Bulls within 86-85 with 10 seconds left but Van Exel answered with two more free throws two seconds later. Guyton missed a long 3-pointer from the baseline and Tarlac grabbed the rebound in the paint. But James Posey knocked the ball away and made one free throw after getting fouled.

Brand scored 22 points and Mercer added 17 for Chicago, which shot just 36 percent (30-of-83) and lost its third straight game.

McDyess made 4-of-5 shots in the first quarter when the Nuggets connected on 10-of-16 and opened a 30-15 lead. Denver took its biggest lead when Robert Pack capped an 8-0 spurt with a layup to make it 40-19 with 8:08 left in the first half.

"They kind of blindsided us in the first quarter, we didn't see it coming," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "The first half, they dominated us on the glass. I'm proud of the group we had in the second half. Our lack of turnovers is encouraging and if we make some free throws in the second half, it's a game to be won."

"It's always something with this team. This team refuses to play 48 minutes of basketball," Denver coach Dan Issel said. We played well in the first half and then we let Chicago come back. I told the guys at halftime that Houston had a big lead last night and the Bulls cut it to five points in the third quarter."

Chicago found its touch in the third period when it shot 58 percent (11-of-19) and outscored Denver, 29-13. Brand scored eight points in a 14-2 run that closed the deficit to 58-57 when he sank two free throws with 4:24 left.

"We came out very flat in the second half," Van Exel said. "I can't let us come out flat again."

The Bulls grabbed their first lead at 70-69 when Mercer made two free throws with 8:38 left. McCloud responded with a 19-footer, but the Bulls went back ahead when rookie Marcus Fizer made two free throws with 7:22 remaining.

Brand made one from the line with 6:51 to go, but Denver went ahead for good 14 seconds later when Voshon Lenard hit a 3-pointer.
