Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 25 points and Patrick Ewing had 16 and 10 rebounds as the Seattle SuperSonics earned their second road win of the season with a frantic 86-83 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Ruben Patterson added 14 points and Rashard Lewis contributed 13 and 10 rebounds for the SuperSonics, who defeated the Clippers for the sixth straight time in Los Angeles.

"They almost had a chance to tie the game up," Payton said. "Things like that happen. We've been struggling, we needed a win. Most of the guys came in and played hard. We did what we're supposed to do."

Lamar Odom had 27 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists for the Clippers, who failed in a bid for their first three-game winning streak in nearly 11 months.

Odom, who delivered the winning shot for Los Angeles in his last two games, banked the ball in off the glass with 1:39 remaining and added two free throws 28 seconds later to tie the game at 80-80.

But Lewis made 1-of-2 free throws and Payton hit a technical free throw when Los Angeles was called for having too many men on the court, pushing Seattle's lead to two points with 23 seconds left. Los Angeles' Tyrone Nesby missed a 3-pointer and Lewis converted two free throws with nine seconds remaining.

After Eric Piatkowski nailed a 3-pointer to move the Clippers within 84-83 with five seconds left, Lewis made two more free throws and Seattle called a 20-second timeout.

Los Angeles, which was out of timeouts, threw the ball the length of the court to Piatkowski with 1.7 seconds left but the buzzer sounded as the ball touched his hands. Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry stormed over to the scorers' table and complained, as did Seattle coach Paul Westphal.

Three-tenths of a second was put back on the clock and the Clippers were able to inbound from the 28-foot mark. Piatkowski grabbed the ball and was obviously fouled on the right arm but no call was made and Los Angeles fell to 2-7 against Western Conference foes.

"We were lethargic, just like they were, and we failed to take advantage of that," said Piatkowski, who finished with five points. "We had stupid turnovers (30 for 23 points) and couldn't make a shot. With a team like Seattle we needed to jump on them right away."

"Our defense was exceptional tonight and it carried us through the second half and for most of the game," Westphal said. "We needed this win because it's hard to get them. It was especially a good win because it was a defensive win."

Nesby gave the Clippers just their second lead in the game, 9-7, a little more than five minutes into the first quarter. Patterson hit a driving layup and added two free throws to put Seattle ahead for good with 5:42 left in the quarter.

However, the SuperSonics never could shake Los Angeles. Their largest lead was just nine points, achieved the last time with 3:57 left when Ewing made two free throws for a 78-69 advantage. That lead evaporated when Los Angeles when on an 11-2 run.

"We got out to a slow start and dug our own hole," said Nesby, who scored 14 points. "But in the second half we got together, started connecting and almost pulled it out."

Ruben Wolkowyski scored seven points and Vin Baker was held to five points but grabbed seven rebounds for the Sonics, who shot just 34.4 percent (32-for-93) from the field, including 3-of-15 (20 percent) from 3-point range. They were outrebounded, 53-48.

"The Clippers made a run on us in the fourth, but we kept our composure by making our shots and earned a tough win," Ewing said. "They have a lot of talent, they came to play ball tonight. They played very sound defense and made us earn our shots."

Sean Rooks chipped in 11 points as the Clippers' bench outscored Seattle's reserves, 32-13. The Clippers shot 45 percent (30-for-67).
