Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- After having dropped their first four games at home, the Washington Wizards got exactly what they needed -- a visit from the Boston Celtics.

Juwan Howard scored 21 points and Mitch Richmond and Richard Hamilton added 19 apiece as the Wizards snapped a five-game overall losing streak by keeping the Celtics winless on the road, 109-89.

Howard scored 15 points in the first half as Washington used a second-quarter spurt to open a 59-46 edge. He also was a factor in a 12-2 burst midway through the third quarter that opened a 30-point lead and turned it into a rout.

"That was fun," Hamilton said. "We needed that for our confidence. It's good to be out there and seeing guys smiling and laughing. We're really starting to feed off each other's strengths and getting to know each other's tendencies."

The Wizards dropped their first four home games by a combined 36 points but used a strong effort on both ends tonight. They shot 56 percent (35-of-62) from the field through three quarters and held Boston to 38 percent (31-of-82) shooting overall.

Washington also recorded 14 steals and committed just 13 turnovers in becoming the last NBA team to win at home.

"It was a tremendous effort by our guys," first-year Wizards coach Leonard Hamilton said. "They were very focused. They executed the things we had in our game plan."

Antoine Walker had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Celtics, who dropped to 0-4 on the road this season. Boston had won its last three games in Washington.

"Not only did we play poor defense but they flat out shot the eyes out of the basket," Celtics coach Rick Pitino said. "When you get on runs like that confidence grows."

The Wizards were holding an 18-15 lead when a 7-0 run gave them some additional breathing room. Cherokee Parks capped the spurt with a dunk with 2:45 to go in the quarter.

The Celtics were still hanging around early in the second quarter when Washington used a 15-6 burst to open a 52-31 lead. That run was capped by Howard's layup with 6:26 left in the half. Howard had another basket and a steal during the spurt.

Richard Hamilton scored 12 and Mitch Richmond nine as Washington took a 59-46 edge into halftime.

"We got a big one tonight," Wizards point guard Rod Strickland said. "We played well early on, moved the ball real well. We got the big lead, and everything just came together."

"That's what we need," Hamilton said. "The first few minutes of each quarter sets the tone for the rest of the quarter."

Washington poured it on in the third quarter, using a 12-2 run to open an 85-55 advantage. Howard's layup with 3:46 left punctuated that burst and brought on the reserves.

"We got to start listening and realizing what it's going to take to get us to the playoffs and that's going to be the defensive end," Celtics forward Paul Pierce said. "This is probably the worst game I've ever been a part of."
