Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Charlotte Hornets second-year point guard Baron Davis took Friday night's team meeting to heart.

Davis posted career highs with 25 points, 10 rebounds and six steals and also handed out eight assists to help the Hornets snap a five-game losing streak and avert a home-and-home sweep at the hands of the Detroit Pistons with a 105-96 triumph.

After Friday's 96-89 home loss to Detroit, the Hornets' players held a 20-minute meeting to discuss the team's lack of energy and focus. Davis entered the contest with averages of 13.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists but seemed ready to give the extra effort he and his teammates were searching for.

"It was not so much getting on each other, it was just really laying things out on the table and finding out from the point guard perspective what the guys expected of me," Davis said. "I just tried to apply it tonight. It was a whole team thing. We looked like a totally different ballclub than we did Friday night."

He hit 7-of-18 shots and 9-of-12 free throws in 43 strong minutes as Charlotte avoided its first six-game losing streak since December 30-January 15 last season.

"I knew I was going to play a lot better," Davis said. "I was focused. I was upset with my play at home on Friday night. I thought I could apply a lot more pressure to their guards than I did at home. I knew that it was important for me to get the guys going in order for us to play well. I have to initiate the offense, initiate the defense. I have to start bringing the intensity from the jump."

Elden Campbell had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Jamal Mashburn and David Wesley added 17 points apiece for the Hornets, who used a 27-12 third-quarter run to break open the game.

"We played hard for four quarters and I really liked our energy," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "That's what was lacking the past few ballgames. There was no excuse for losing (Friday's) game. I thought we had the game in hand. We just didn't come with the energy in the second half. But this is a big win for us. We needed this."

P.J. Brown scored 15 points as all five starters reached double figures for Charlotte. The Hornets got just 12 points from their bench but surpassed 100 points for the first time since an opening night win at Atlanta.

As usual, Jerry Stackhouse led the Pistons with 22 points. Detroit has alternated wins and losses over its last six games and Stackhouse has led the team in scoring in all but two of its 11 games this season.

"I thought we looked tired tonight and we've got to fix that before Tuesday," Stackhouse said. "We tried but we were just a half-step slow and our shots were just a little short. We couldn't slow anything down, that let them get ahead and then we had to start pressing."

Chucky Atkins had 15 points and 10 assists for Detroit, which shot 43 percent (35-of-82) and held a 49-47 rebounding edge. Billy Owens had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Jud Buechler added 10 points for the Pistons, who drew the ire of coach George Irvine with their lackluster effort.

"We're just not a good enough team to play at less than 100 percent and expect to win any games," Irvine said. "Our effort just wasn't sharp and Charlotte's was. They wanted it more and they wanted it. Our guys know what effort it will take for us to win games, but I guess they aren't prepared to put forth that effort every night. Maybe it's just too much for me to ask."

The Hornets shot 43 percent (34-of-79) and scored 30 points off 22 turnovers.

Davis' night got off to an inauspicious start when he turned the ball over on the opening possession and watched as Atkins went in for a layup to give Detroit the early lead.

But Davis made two free throws, fed Mashburn for a dunk and hit a jumper to help the Hornets build a 25-20 lead after one quarter. After Buechler's jumper got the Pistons within 25-24 early in the second period, Davis made a layup.

He snapped a 29-29 tie with another jumper, sparking a 9-0 run that he capped with a free throw, giving Charlotte the lead for good, 38-29, with 6:16 left in the first half.

"Baron is really maturing as a player," Silas said. "He has all the tools to become a very good player. It's just the fact that he has to mature. The point position is possibly the hardest to play in pro basketball and he's got a lot to learn but he's making great strides."

Davis added a 20-footer and a 3-pointer as the Hornets built a 52-45 lead at the break before blowing out Detroit in the third quarter.

"I just thought we came out with a lot of energy," Davis said. "We kept playing hard even though they made their runs. We came up with big baskets and made our free throws and got key rebounds."

Campbell began the game's biggest spurt with a layup and Davis and Stackhouse sank successive 25-footers as the lead swelled to 60-47 with 10:31 left in the third quarter. A free throw by Brown and Davis' dunk made it 67-51 and Wesley's 16-footer with 2:31 remaining in the period gave Charlotte its biggest lead at 79-59.

"We had a 10-point lead in the first half of the last game and really just kind of shut down," Wesley said. "We had a 20-point lead tonight and I felt like we just weren't going to shut down. We were going to keep working for baskets and just do whatever it took to win this game."
