Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Michael Finley scored 29 points and Steve Nash dished out a career-high 17 assists as the Dallas Mavericks recorded only their second road win over the Utah Jazz in 25 years, 107-98.

Nash recorded his 17th assist on a basket by Hubert Davis that gave Dallas a commanding 103-90 lead with 2:02 to play. The Mavericks led by as many as 16 points.

"We put together a solid 48 minutes tonight," Nash said. "That's something we haven't been able to do before tonight. Tonight we played a lot closer to our expectations than we have all year."

Jacque Vaughn cut the deficit to seven with 53 seconds to play after connecting on back-to-back 3-pointers. But a pair of free throws by Howard Eisley with 50 seconds left clinched the win against his former team.

Coming into the game, the Jazz led the league in field-goal and 3-point percentage. Dallas is the only team to score more than 100 points against Utah this season and has done it twice.

Karl Malone has led the Jazz in scoring in eight of the first 10 games but was held to 13 tonight.

With less than three minutes to play, Nash found Finley underneath for an easy basket, giving the Mavericks an 11-point lead and Finley a game-high 29 points. Nash also finished with 17 points and five rebounds.

"It was a total team effort." said Finley. "Everybody who played in the game played hard and well. I think we picked it up on the defensive end, which went a long ways to give us the win."

Bryon Russell knocked down a 3-pointer midway through the final period to cut Utah's deficit to 93-84, but Davis answered with a 3-pointer on the next possession to restore a 12-point cushion.

Utah took the lead with 9:49 to play in the second quarter. But a pair of free throws by Finley put Dallas ahead by a point. The Jazz ran off five straight points to get within 43-35 with just over five minutes to go before halftime, but the Mavs took a 56-48 lead into the locker room.

"It's one of those games where they came out ready to play and maybe we didn't," said Malone. "But give them credit. They did everything they needed to do to win and we didn't. And we could just never get nothing going all night. They came ready to play from the start."

Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki left for good with 3:47 to play suffering a sprained shoulder on a hit by Karl Malone. He exited right after the incident in the third quarter but returned when Shawn Bradley fouled out. Nowitzki had 20 points and 14 rebounds, giving him double-doubles in each of the last three games.

"The trainers said I couldn't hurt it anymore so I went back into the game," said Nowitzki who leads the team in scoring and rebounding. "But when it was hit the second time, I came out for treatment. But if I feel good tomorrow, I will play against Seattle (on Tuesday)."

Dallas has won five of seven road games this season. The surprising Mavericks moved into a first-place tie with Utah and San Antonio in the Midwest Division with their season-high third straight win. They concluded a 4-2 10-day road trip.

"We just came out and had our `A' game on and came away with the win," said Finley.

Dallas shot 53.5 percent from the field (38-of-71) while limiting Utah to barely 40 percent (36-of-89). The Mavs were 9-of-18 from 3-point range and nearly battled to a stalemate on the boards, 43-39.
