Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Nick Van Exel had 20 points and a season-high 14 assists as the Denver Nuggets posted their first road win of the season, 95-92 over the Vancouver Grizzlies, who were without guard Michael Dickerson.

Van Exel drained four free throws in the final 20 seconds, allowing the Nuggets to hold off Vancouver and earn their third straight victory.

Van Exel left the door open for the Grizzlies to send the game to overtime after the veteran guard made only one of two free throws with 3.8 seconds left. But Vancouver forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim's 33-footer bounded off the side of the rim just before the buzzer, giving Denver its first win away from the Pepsi Center in four tries.

"We're feeling pretty good," Van Exel said. "Defensively, we are confident, we've got a nice little stretch going. "Our defense has been great the last three games and we just have to continue to play that way."

The Grizzlies appeared lost at times without Dickerson, who was placed on the injured list earlier in the day with a sprained left ankle sustained in Saturday's loss to Dallas. They passed up a number of open shots in the second half in favor of bad passes, leading to 14 turnovers after intermission.

"We had two turnovers at the half and we end up with 16 just careless turnovers," Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe said. "I thought the guys gave a great effort but we didn't take care of the basketball."

Abdur-Rahim, who missed the last game to be with his ill mother, collected 19 points and a season-high 14 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who have lost five straight.

Denver outscored the Grizzlies 20-11 in the third quarter to take a 75-65 lead into the final period.

"We were out there playing hard but had a letdown in the third quarter and that hurt us," Vancouver point guard Mike Bibby said. "In the fourth quarter, we started fighting back but it was too late. We had some turnover down the stretch."

Vancouver opened the session with an 8-0 run to draw with two with 9:35 left but McDyess scored seven points as part of a 9-2 spurt, giving Denver an 84-75 cushion at the 7:09 mark.

Still trailing by eight with just over three minutes to play, Bibby drained a 19-footer and Abdur-Rahim made two free throws to halve the deficit with 1:50 left.

James Posey's free throw gave the Nuggets a five-point lead but Edwards hit a 15-footer with 40 seconds left and followed with one of two from the line, making it 91-89 with 25 seconds remaining.

Van Exel made three foul shots to push the lead back to five but after Grizzlies guard Damon Jones converted a three-point play, the Nuggets guard hit just one of two from the stripe, giving Vancouver one last chance that was lost when Abdur-Rahim misfired on a long jumper.

"I think Nick wanted to win this game more than anyone," McDyess said. "He came out shooting the ball in the second half, playing good defense. He played like a possesed man tonight."

McDyess collected 21 points and 10 rebounds, Keon Clark added 13 points and Raef LaFrentz grabbed 13 rebounds for Denver, which shot 48 percent (37-of-77) from the floor but converted only 16-of-30 free throws.

Bibby had 18 points and Edward and Harrington scored 13 apiece for the Grizzlies, who shot 42 percent (35-of-84) and held a 49-42 edge on the glass.
