Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- LaPhonso Ellis showed the Minnesota Timberwolves he is ready to take over for Joe Smith.

Ellis collected 16 points and 12 rebounds and tipped in Kevin Garnett's miss with three seconds left, giving the Timberwolves a 101-100 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies appeared to be on their way to their first win in Minnesota when Kevin Edwards buried a 3-pointer from the right corner, giving vancouver a 100-99 lead with 24 seconds to play.

Garnett, who scored 24 points, drove the left side and got past Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Grant Long and rookie Stromile Swift came off their men to help on defense and Garnett lofted a shot over them that bounded off the rim.

Ellis snuck past Edwards on the weak side and tipped it in to give Minnesota the lead.

"I tried to get myself in position, knowing that if he missed, 90 percent of the time it comes off on the other side," Ellis said.

On Vancouver's last possession, Abdur-Rahim was bottled up and passed to Grant Long, whose shot did not beat the buzzer.

The injury-plagued Ellis was signed in the offseason to serve as an insurance policy to Smith, who signed illegal contracts and was declared a free agent by an arbitrator. Smith signed with Detroit on Monday, leaving Minnesota without one of its key players.

"Technically, I am not supposed to be playing," Ellis said. "I was told after each of my injuries that they were career-ending. I'm just blessed to be playing."

Coming off the bench, Ellis had been averaging 6.1 points and 4.1 rebounds until tonight, when he made 7-of-11 shots and was active on offense and defense, with two blocks and two steals.

"Fonz stepped it up with points, blocks, steals," Wolves coach Flip Saunders said. "He even had three assists. ... It was a great team effort and that's how we have to play the rest of the way."

"Ellis did a great job for Minnesota down the stretch and made a huge play at the end," said Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe, who once coached the Wolves. "If the ball bounces any other way, he isn't able to make that play. But it just didn't bounce our way in the end."

Kevin Garnett had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Chauncey Billups scored 21 points for Minnesota, which improved to 11-0 all-time at home against Vancouver.

Mike Bibby scored a career-high 37 points for the Grizzlies, who lost their first 10 visits here by an average of 17.7 points. Vancouver has lost six in a row since a franchise-record 4-1 start.

"I had been in a slump," said Bibby, who made 14-of-18 shots. "I could tell after my first couple sshots that they were going. It felt good from the start."

Ellis had a steal and dunk to end the third quarter and give the Wolves a 79-72 lead. But the Grizzlies hung around and trailed just 97-93 after Ellis made two free throws with 1:40 remaining.

Abdur-Rahim, who scored 22 points, made a layup 11 seconds later and Bibby tied it with a jumper with 59 seconds to go. Garnett made two free throws with 45 seconds remaining.

Rasho Nestreovic had 13 points and 12 boards for the Wolves, who welcomed back point guard Terrell Brandon. After missing four games with a sprained ankle, Brandon started and had 11 points and seven assists.

"It doesn't feel that well," he said. "It will never be 100 perxcent with me playing on it. ... I talked to the doctor about it and was told that it's not going to get any better unless I have surgery. I am not going to do that."

Edwards scored 13 points for Vancouver, which shot 55 percent (41-of-75) but was outrebounded, 45-35.

Bibby scored 20 points in the first half as Vancouver grabbed a 50-47 lead.
