Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The Utah Jazz missed Karl Malone a lot less than the Denver Nuggets missed Antonio McDyess.

With Malone serving a one-game suspension, the Jazz used a balanced attack to roar to a 116-78 victory over the Nuggets, who got no help from their star power forward.

Malone drew a one-game ban and a $7,500 fine from the NBA for slapping Dallas forward Christian Laettner in Monday's home loss, leaving them without his 23.8 points and 10.7 rebounds.

"I'm sure once they found out Karl wasn't playing, they probably thought they had a better chance of winning the game," Jazz forward Donyell Marshall said. "I think we went out and took their spirit away from them early."

It was just the seventh game Malone has missed since entering the NBA in 1984 and the Nuggets figured to take advantage with explosive power forward Antonio McDyess, who averages 16.2 points and 9.4 rebounds.

But McDyess struggled, scoring a season-low four points on just 1-of-9 shooting. In fact, he was outscored by David Benoit, Malone's replacement who collected six points.

"You can't single out any one guy," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "I think every man who had a Denver uniform on tonight was awful so I think it's unfair to single out any one guy."

"Collectively, we just wanted to come out and dedicate the game to Karl because he's our leader," Benoit said. "So we just wanted to hold the fort down and let him know we miss him."

Marshall scored 17 points off the bench for the Jazz, who had six players in double figures and shot 58 percent (47-of-81) from the field as they notched their biggest win of the season.

"This game goes to show you how good this Jazz team can be," Utah guard John Starks said. "When we play defense, stay within our offense, make sharp cuts, set picks and do all the basic things, you know you're supposed to do, you can count on a win."

The starters managed just 24 points for Denver, which shot 37 percent (27-of-73) and absorbed its worst loss of the season. The Nuggets have lost eight straight visits to Utah since December 7, 1996.

Denver trailed 28-25 after one quarter and still was within four points after a free throw by Raef LaFrentz with 9:59 left in the second quarter. Utah responded with a 13-3 run fueled by four points each from John Stockton and Quincy Lewis, opening a 47-33 lead with 5:12 remaining in the period.

The Jazz led 59-42 at halftime and the teams traded baskets for the first six minutes of the third quarter until Utah put away the game with a 17-4 burst. Marshall scored eight points in the run and Starks capped it at 84-53 with a 3-pointer with 1:49 to go.

Jacque Vaughn directed garbage time, amassing a career-high 15 assists. Teenage rookie DeShawn Stevenson scored 11 points in the fourth quarter for the Jazz, who opened a 40-point lead in the final minute.

Stockton and Bryon Russell scored 13 points each and Lewis had 12 for Utah, which held a 47-34 rebounding edge and committed just 11 turnovers.

Voshon lenard scored 14 points and Robert Pack added 12 for Denver, which committed 15 turnovers and had a three-game winning streak snapped.

"We got beat in every aspect of the game," Issel said. "We didn't guard anybody, we turned the ball over, we didn't get back, we didn't execute our offense, missed free throws. They just hammered us in every aspect of the game."
