Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Clarence Weatherspoon scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers ended the Miami Heat's four-year winning streak at Gund Arena, handing them an 85-80 loss.

Two free throws by Trajan Langdon with 3.8 seconds left sealed the victory for Cleveland, which remained one of three unbeaten home teams in the NBA this season.

With 49.8 seconds to play, Tim Hardaway nailed a 3-pointer to get Miami within 83-80.

Bruce Bowen missed three straight baskets in the final 15 seconds, including a wide-open 3-pointer from the corner that would have tied it for the Heat. He finished with two points on 1-for-7 shooting.

Chris Gatling blocked Brian Grant's shot with 3:49 to play that would have cut the Miami's deficit to 78-77. Gatling also came up with a steal on Hardaway.

"I was the weak-side help down low. Grant came up and it was just a simple block," said Gatling, who scored 15 points off the bench. "We were able to keep the ball inbounds with Weatherspoon tipping it to me and we were off running."

"This is a good team with a lot of versatility," added Weatherspoon, who made 4-of-9 3-pointers. "We had balance throughout the game. We just made huge stops down the stretch. Gatling was big for us down the stretch with a big steal and huge block."

At 9-3, the Cavs are off to their best start since the 1996-97 season.

They improved to 6-0 at Gund Arena, where they had lost the previous seven meetings with Miami. Cleveland held the Heat to 40 percent shooting, completing a sweep of the home-and-home series that began with a 19-point road win on Wednesday.

The Heat have dropped four of their last five games and still have not given Pat Riley his 250th win as Miami coach. They got 19 points from Eddie Jones, who missed four games with a strained calf, but committed 17 turnovers and lost their fifth road game in six tries.

"I didn't get a win," Jones said. "The Cavs are playing great basketball. They are definitely playing better than what's on paper and they are led by a young kid (in Andre) Miller.

The Cavaliers limited the Heat to 18 points in the fourth quarter. They outrebounded Miami, 45-32, and got a huge boost from their bench. Cleveland's reserves contributed 26 points and 15 rebounds, compared to five and five by Miami's bench.

"They beat us on the bench," Riley said. "They've got guys whose nature is to work the game. (Matt) Harpring is a worker. Miller is out of the work program. And Weatherspoon and Gatling are blue collar guys.

"The Cavs won it with second shots. We had good defense on our part, but they just dug it out. We went down to the wire and we didn't execute. That was a war. They outrebounded us by 13, and that's the only thing I thought really hurt us.
