Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- It did not take long for Joe Smith to make his presence felt with the Detroit Pistons.

Smith scored 20 points in his debut for his new team as the Pistons recorded their highest offensive output of the season in a 118-96 rout of the slumping Vancouver Grizzlies.

In search of frontcourt help to ease the pressure off shooting guard Jerry Stackhouse, the Pistons signed Smith on Monday to a one-year, $2.25 million contract.

He immediately filled the bill for the Pistons at power forward, coming off the bench and connecting on 8-of-11 shots from the field in 20 minutes.

"I really didn't know what to expect when I hit the court tonight," Smith said. "I wanted to go out there and have fun, regardless of what I did as an individual. I shot the ball well and I got the ball in position where I could score."

"I think you have to be impressed with what kind of shape he was in," Pistons said George Irvine said. "The fact that he has not played for a month and has only benefited from a couple days of my coaching. He was pretty remarkable. He will help us a great deal. He had 20 points but he also got two charges and helped defensively."

Stackhouse, who entered the game third in the league in scoring at 27.6 points per contest, was the force early. He scored 14 of his 31 points in the first quarter to help Detroit open a 37-19 advantage.

Chucky Atkins added 12 points for the Pistons, whose previous highest output this season came in a 108-94 win over New Jersey.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Vancouver, which suffered its seventh straight loss since an encouraging 4-1 start.

"It is the worst I've seen this team play. We played soft and I don't consider myself or the team soft," Abdur-Rahim said. "I probably take more of the burden being a leader on this team. We are digging ourselves into a hole. If we want to achieve respectability as individuals, a franchise and team, we have to play better defensively."

Looking like an energized team, the Pistons got off to a superb start led by Stackhouse and opened a 23-10 lead less than eight minutes into the contest on Atkins' three-point play. Stackhouse had 11 points in the early burst.

Stackhouse drilled a 3-pointer with 49 seconds left in the period, extending the Pistons' lead to 37-17

Detroit build its huge lead by shooting 62 percent (16-of-26) in the first quarter while holding Vancouver to just 39 percent (8-of-21).

"It was great. There was lot of energy in the building tonight," Stackhouse said. "It's always fun and a lot easier to play when you've got that type of energy in the building and tonight we had it from the start.

"With Joe coming out and it being his first game, there was a lot of excitement about how we were going to play. The other guys took it upon themselves to show some pride and set the tone."

Smith entered the game with 3:21 left in the first quarter to a standing ovation and scored his initial points as a Piston when he made short hookshot 33 seconds into the the second period.

"That made me feel good. It made me feel accepted," Smith said. "You always have to, especially being the new guy try to impress the fans. I just wanted to come out and put on a show for the fans."

Jerome Williams, who contributed 10 of the Pistons' 54 bench points, hit two free throws to give Detroit its biggest lead, 47-23, with 9:23 left before halftime.

Stackhouse had 20 points in the half as Detroit shot 63 percent (28-of-45) and held a 70-50 advantage. The Pistons shot 60 percent (47-of-80) overall.

Showing a display of emotion, Smith was whistled for techinal foul midway through the fourth quarter for hanging on the rim following a dunk.

"That was a lot of emotion, a lot of frustration, a lot of everything all coming out on one play," Smith said. "It's just a big relief to be back on the floor doing what I love to do."

Damon Jones added 16 points off the bench for the Grizzlies, who shot 40 percent (34-of-85) and got no closer than 14 points in the second half.
