Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets played like they were still on a high after handing the Philadelphia 76ers their first loss of the season.

David Wesley scored 24 points and Jamal Mashburn added 20 as the Hornets routed the struggling Milwaukee Bucks, 106-90, for their season-high fourth straight victory.

Charlotte took control with a 28-2 burst that bridged the first two quarters. The Hornets opened a 50-29 lead en route to a comfortable 62-43 cushion at halftime.

Eldridge Recasner had nine points during the spurt, all on 3-pointers.

On Wednesday, Charlotte ended Philadelphia's season-opening 10-game winning streak with an 88-73 victory. The Hornets picked right up where they left off two days ago, shooting a sizzling 55 percent (41-of-75) from the field, including 11-of-23 from 3-point range. Wesley (10-of-17) and Mashburn (7-of-11) were a combined 17-of-28.

"I didn't think we'd come out and shoot like this," Wesley said. "Certain teams in the league leave the floor wide open. The Bucks double (team) and it opens the floor for teams that move the ball and hit their shots."

Ray Allen had 21 points and Sam Cassell 19 for the Bucks, who are off to a disappointing 3-8 start. Before the game, Milwaukee signed free agent forward Jerome Kersey.

The Bucks opened a nine-point lead in the first quarter but shot just 38 percent (33-of-87) and made only 5-of-17 3-pointers.

"We've been struggling all season," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "We're not a very good offensive team, we're not a very good offensive team. When you're shooting 40 percent and they're shooting 60 percent, you're not winning."

Milwaukee forward Glenn Robinson missed the game with a head cold. The Bucks' problems were compounded by the poor shooting of Tim Thomas (2-of-12) and Lindsay Hunter (4-of-15).

"They made a lot of shots," Cassell said. "A lot of (bleeping) shots. Inside shots, outside shots. And we didn't make any. I don't think we're struggling offensively. I mean, we're getting good shots. This is just my opinion, but it's not our offense that's the problem."

Six players reached double figures for Charlotte. Elden Campbell and Baron Davis scored 13 apiece, while Recasner and rookie Jamaal Magliore added 11 and 10 off the bench, respectively.

"We are playing unselfish basketball right now and we're winning games," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We need to keep working hard and playing defense the way we have been."

Charlotte continued to pour it on in the third quarter, opening an 83-57 cushion on Wesley's 3-pointer with 1:12 left in the third quarter. The rest of the game was little more than garbage time.

"Our coaches are letting us play basketball and have fun," said Davis, who handed out 11 assists. "It all starts on the defensive end of the floor. We knew early in the season we weren't playing well but we've stepped it up."

"Baron's been big," Wesley added. "He's really concentrated on spreading the ball around and getting guys good looks. I think our success is a combination of good defense, offense and hustle."

Davis and P.J. Bown grabbed eight rebounds apiece, helping the Hornets outrebound the Bucks, 42-36. Silas pointed to Charlotte's strength on the boards.

"We were not a good offensive rebounding team last season," he said. "We are this year. It gives us a wonderful chance to get more shots up and improve our chances of winning. Elden, P.J. (Brown) and the rest of the team are doing a wonderful job of going to the glass and getting boards."
