Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- In the fourth quarter, the youth of the Los Angeles Clippers showed its promise. In overtime, it showed its problems.

After leading a fourth-quarter comeback, rookies Keyon Dooling and Darius Miles disappeared in the extra session as the Clippers suffered a 95-89 loss to the Phoenix Suns, who got a big game from Shawn Marion.

"We just have to learn from every game," Dooling said. "Just take what we can and build off that."

The Clippers trailed by 16 points with 7:21 left in the fourth quarter before Dooling and Miles combined for 11 points in a 15-0 run, cutting the deficit to 75-74 with 3:14 remaining.

Miles, who became the highest high school player selected in the draft when the Clippers tabbed him third, made a pair of baskets that kept Los Angeles close. Dooling, who went 10th to Orlando and was acquired in a trade, made a pair of drives on Jason Kidd in the final minute, both of which tied the game.

"My main goal was to go out and play good defense and make something happen to turn the game around," Miles said.

"He did a good job, stayed active on defense, kept moving," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "He's only 19, he's still learning, he's a hard worker. But every young player makes mistakes."

The rookies were nowhere to be found in overtime. Miles lost control of a rebound and a valuable possession with 1:21 to go. Dooling threw away an inbounds pass less than 30 seconds later, costing the Clippers another chance to tie.

A third consecutive turnover was too much to overcome as the Suns converted another bad inbounds pass by Eric Piatkowski into a basket by Marion that made it 92-87 with 30 seconds remaining.

Guarded by Miles, Marion scored seven of his 26 points in overtime and Cliff Robinson added 25 points for Phoenix, which has beaten Los Angeles 12 straight times since March 18, 1997.

"We should have closed the game out when we had the opportunity," said Marion, who missed a 3-pointer at the end of regulation. "We let them back in the game and they just took off. They've got a good squad."

Dooling, a reserve point guard, scored 13 points in 20 minutes. Miles, a swingman still feeling his way, collected 13 points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes. They combined to commit seven turnovers.

"We're just one step away," Dooling said. "We just need to keep playing hard and everything will come together."

Lamar Odom had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Piatkowski scored 12 points for the Clippers, who have lost four in a row.

Marion scored eight straight points for Phoenix, giving the Suns a 75-59 lead with 7:21 left in the fourth quarter. Dooling and Miles made two free throws each and Dooling had a pair of hoops around a layup by Piatkowski before Odom and Miles made jumpers, cutting the deficit to one point.

"Our defense for most of the game was good," said Suns coach Scott Skiles, whose team has won three in a row. "But Odom, Dooling and Miles kicked it into high gear and as a result we almost lost the game."

Mario Elie made a 3-pointer, but Miles dunked off a lob from Dooling and Piatkowski's two free throws tied it at 78-78 with 1:24 remaining. Dooling answered jumpers by Marion and Robinson with layups before Marion missed just before the buzzer.

Marion opened overtime with a pair of jumpers and Elie drilled another 3-pointer for an 89-82 lead. Odom threw in a hook and Piatkowski made three free throws to make it a one-possession game with 1:40 to go.

Robinson had his shot blocked and Miles grabbed the rebound but Elie slapped it away from the inattentive rookie. Piatkowski's inbounds pass turned into a follow dunk by Marion that sealed it.

Elie scored 15 points and Kidd added 10 and nine assists for the Suns, who shot 41 percent (35-of-86) and forced 29 turnovers.

Sean Rooks grabbed 11 rebounds for the Clippers, who owned a 58-35 edge on the boards but shot just 39 percent (32-of-83).

Robinson scored 13 points in the first quarter as Phoenix raced to a 30-14 lead. Los Angeles fought back within 45-38 at the half but Phoenix rebuilt the lead to 63-52 entering the fourth quarter.
