Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning must be getting sick and tired of watching the Miami Heat's offensive futility.

Out for the season with a kidney ailment, the All-Star center sat helplessly on the bench as the Heat again were victims of a stagnant offense in a wire-to-wire 91-80 loss to the rejuvenated Houston Rockets.

Cuttino Mobley scored 21 points off the bench for the Rockets, who have won five of their last six games. Houston posted its first win in Miami in six tries dating to December 26, 1994 and won for just the second time in seven road games this season.

"He's been tremendous," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said of Mobley. "He's really been a fourth-quarter player. He's a big-play player and that's why we use him. We rested him a little bit and then he came in with all that energy and made some big plays."

"I have personal goals, I want to be an All-Star and you might have a better chance if you start," Mobley said. "But I want people to say, `Hey, he's consistent.'"

Miami's offense has been woeful since scoring 105 points in a season-opening victory against Orlando. The Heat were averaging just 84 points per game entering tonight and have not scored more than 91 in the last dozen contests.

"The problem is that we get down by 20 points and I have to go to a gimmick to get back into it," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Pressing is not our game. Our game is defense. Our defense in the first half was deplorable.

"I said it all the other night, we hit a wall early in the season and we need to get it back, find a rotation that works and a bench combination."

Miami showed signs of life with a 24-8 run spanning the third and fourth quarters, pulling within 70-67 with 9:44 to play and bringing Mourning and the crowd at American Airlines Arena to their feet.

But the Heat ran out of steam down the stretch while the young Rockets had plenty left in their legs to hold off the charge.

Kenny Thomas hit a 3-pointer during an 9-0 burst that gave Houston an 81-69 cushion midway through the final period.

After Anthony Mason's two free throws got the Heat within three, Steve Francis made two free throws, Thomas drilled a 25-footer and Francis and Mobley hit back-to-back jumpers to extend the advantage to 12.

"It shows that you can regroup and not let the frantic chaos get the best of you," Tomjanovich said. "A lot of teams don't overcome that. It comes down to making big plays."

Leading 21-16 after one period, the Rockets began pouring it on in the second. Thomas made a layup, Matt Bullard hit a 3-pointer and Mobley made consecutive baskets before Moochie Norris' layup made it 32-18 with 8:49 remaining in the first half.

Maurice Taylor's short jumper midway through the third period gave Houston its biggest lead, 62-41, before the Heat began to crawl back in it.

Miami mounted a 19-6 charge to close the quarter, sparked by eight points from Eddie Jones.

Mason had 16 points -- going 12-of-12 at the line -- and 10 rebounds and Brian Grant and Tim Hardaway added 15 points apiece for the Heat, who shot 35 percent (23-of-66) and scored 19 points off turnovers.

Francis scored 15 points, Thomas 13 and Walt Williams 10 for the Rockets, who shot 49 percent (32-of-66) and held a 42-32 edge on the boards.
