Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- When Greg Anthony gave the Portland Trail Blazers a nine-point lead with 7:23 left, it seemed they would cruise, but sloppy execution was almost their undoing.

Rasheed Wallace and Dale Davis both grabbed offensive rebounds on one possession with less than two minutes to play and the Trail Blazers clinging to a one-point lead, helping them escape with an 86-84 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

Wallace finished with 25 points and Scottie Pippen scored 14 for the Blazers, who were playing their first game at home after a seven-game road trip, their longest since the 1977-78 season.

"It was good to get that first game at home after the road trip," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "A lot of teams come back after trips and lose the first one. We were in good stretches, especially in the first and third quarters."

Aaron Williams scored 17 points and Kendall Gill and Stephon Marbury added 15 apiece for the Nets, who had two chances to tie the game in the final minute after trailing all night.

But Marbury and Gill both missed jumpers and the Nets lost their third straight.

"I was very pleased with the way we played Marbury," Dunleavy said. "Damon (Stoudamire) worked hard and we got some good double-teams on him. We made him work. If you had told me beofre the game that he was going to go 6-for-16, I'd tell you, `Where do I sign up for that?'."

"Portland is a great team and you can't have mental breakdowns against them," Marbury said.

After Anthony's 3-pointer put Portland up 79-70 with 7:23 to play, the Blazers did not score again for nearly four minutes.

Evan Eschmeyer had back-to-back dunks, Gill got a fast-break dunk and Williams hit two free throws in an 8-0 run that brought the Nets within 79-78 with 4:08 left.

During their scoreless stretch, Pippen dribbled the ball off his foot, Anthony missed a 3-pointer and a short jumper after he grabbed the offensive rebound and Stoudamire threw away the ball.

After Portland center Arvydas Sabonis missed two free throws, Johnny Newman had a chance to put New Jersey ahead but missed a 3-pointer. Wallace grabbed the rebound and lobbed an outlet pass to Pippen, who soared for a dunk that made it 81-78 with 3:24 to go.

Gill hit a pair of free throws but Sabonis answered with a pretty reverse layup around Eschmeyer.

Eschmeyer brought the Nets back within a point when he hit two free throws with 2:25 to play, but he fouled Wallace after the Blazers forward grabbed an offensive rebound. Wallace hit the first of two free throws, and Davis controlled the rebound of the second.

Wallace then worked patiently in the post and left Eschmeyer flat-footed, spinning for a lay-in that put Portland on top, 86-82, with 1:42 left.

"That one play in the low post when Rasheed made a turnaround layup that made the score 86-82 is typical of the way he had been delivering," Dunleavy said.

"We have Rasheed on our team," Portland guard Bonzi Wells said. "We don't ever worry when we have Rasheed on our team."

Gill scored on a driving finger roll, but despite a 24-second violation against Portland and Stoudamire's pass straight into Gill's hands in the final minute, the Nets could not capitalize and lost their third straight.

Despite their mistakes and the seven-game road trip, the Blazers have won six of their last eight and are looking more like the powerhouse they were expected to be this season. They have won four straight overall.

The Trail Blazers never trailed and led by as much 66-54 when Pippen hit a 3-pointer with 4:52 left in the third quarter.
