Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Maybe the Dallas Mavericks won't have to wait another year after all.

Michael Finley scored a season-high 32 points and Steve Nash added 21 and nine assists as the Mavericks, off to their best start in 17 years, rolled over the shorthanded Toronto Raptors, 107-93.

"It is unbelievable that Finley scored 16 baskets, and I'm not saying he deserved to, but he needs to go to the basket some more," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "He needs to get to the foul line. He carried us for periods of time."

Dirk Nowitzki added 19 points, including four 3-pointers, and Hubert Davis scored 11 for Dallas, which has not made the playoffs in 10 seasons but has broken out to a 10-5 record.

"You can't make a statement in one game, but if anyone watched tonight and saw the way we played for 48 minutes, they have to be impressed," Finley said. "Even though this wasn't one of our better games, we did some things and we have to be a team to reckon with in the West. When my shot wasn't going then Steve and Dirk got their shot going. When we all have it going like that, we are a tough team to beat."

The Mavs are off to their best 15-game start since the 1983-84 season, when they started 11-4 and went on to post the first winning season in franchise history.

"We always knew we could score," Finley said. "We have so many offensive weapons on the team, we can score against any team in this league. It's going to come to defense. I think defense is what got us the margin, got us into the break, got us some easy looks at the basket. It's a key ingredient to us winning."

The Raptors, playing without the injured Vince Carter, were within three points early in the fourth quarter but could get no closer and the Mavericks won going away, with the final score their largest lead.

"We had a great effort," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We made some mistakes. We allowed too much penetration. They were able to penetrate and kick. We didn't react. Plus they shot the ball well and made some big-time shots."

Carter, who is second in the NBA at 27.5 points points per game, is expected to miss at least one more game with an injured tendon in his left knee.

"I think overall we were shorthanded, missing Vince, сthat isn't an excuse," Jackson said. "This was a very winnable game against a very good team. We didn't make the plays. We didn't make the plays when it counted."

Corliss Williamson scored 22 points and Antonio Davis added 16 and 11 rebounds for the Raptors, who lost for the first time in four games. Mark Jackson finished with 13 points and nine assists and Charles Oakley contributed 14 boards.

The Mavericks got off to a shaky start, claiming they were nervous about the game being on national television. Toronto led by as much as eight points several times in the first quarter.

Nash scored six straight points spanning the first and second quarters and the Mavericks took their first lead at 29-27 on Nowitzki's 3-pointer from the right side with 10:18 to play in the half.

Nash followed with a 25-footer from the left side and a layup, stretching the lead to 34-27 with 9:14 left.

Dallas built its lead to as much as eight points, but Toronto fought back to tie it, 48-48, when Oakley hit 1-of-2 free throws with 56 seconds left in the half.

But rookie Eduardo Najera put in a layup and Nash nailed a 3-pointer down the stretch to put Dallas up 53-48 at the half.

The Raptors managed to take the lead, 56-55, with 8:35 left in the third quarter, when Jackson converted a three-point play. But Finley connected from 14 feet, Nowitzki hit a 3-pointer and Finley drilled one from 20 feet, putting the Mavericks back up, 62-56.

Nowitzki connected on a 3-pointer with 5:28 left, capping an 8-2 spurt that put the Mavericks up 86-76, and though they could never break open the game, they never let the Raptors closer than six points the rest of the way.

Hubert Davis suffered a sprained left groin when he took a charge with 3:57 left.

"I'm sorry about Hubert," Nelson said. "He was playing well for us. He had a tough assignment tonight (guarding Jackson). He anchored our defense, cleaned out the point guard most of the night. He did a marvelous job."
