Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Washington Wizards may be worse at home than the Atlanta Hawks are on the road.

Lorenzen Wright scored 18 of his season-high 23 points in the first half, when the Hawks bolted to a 20-point lead and cruised to a 102-75 victory over the Wizards, their first road win of the season.

"Yeah, that's good. I'm happy for the guys," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "A lot of rides home haven't been go‹¹ This one will be much more enjoyable. A lot of times, it's all about timing."

"It feels great to win one on the road," said Wright, who also grabbed 12 rebounds. "We've won a couple at home, now this lets us know we can win on the road."

Atlanta came in with a league-worst 0-8 road mark and without leading scorer Jim Jackson, who is sidelined with a sprained knee. The Hawks had dropped 22 straight road games dating to February 25 of last season.

However, the Wizards came in with just a 2-5 mark at the MCI Center and looked uncompetitive for most of the last three quarters. Their six home losses are surpassed only by the Los Angeles Clippers.

"It's tough at times because we don't have that support (from fans) because we haven't been playing well," Wizards guard Rod Strickland said. "They're looking for a winner. We haven't been able to do that so far."

Wright made 9-of-13 shots in his best game of the season. The 6-11 forward-center came off the bench in the first quarter and scored 10 points in the period, helping Atlanta open a 25-18 lead.

He added another eight in the second quarter, when the Hawks held the Wizards to 12 points and built their lead to 50-30. Wright made all eight of his shots in the first half.

"I was just trying to come out and play aggresive," Wright said. "We knew if we played aggressive, we probably could get a win here. We've had 22 consecutive road losses, so we had to do something."

"Lorenzen sure had a huge first half," Kruger said. "He was very aggressive. He made jumpers. He took the ball to the goal strong, finished plays. He did a nice job."

Alan Henderson had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Jason Terry scored 13 points for the Hawks, who never let the lead dip below 15 points in the second half. Atlanta is 2-2 after a 1-10 start.

"They're kind of like us. They have a squad whose confidence is not that high," Wright said. "But I'm not one, with a 3-12 record, to criticize anybody. We were just trying to get that monkey off our back. It's been a long time since we've run anybody out. They probably looked at us as an easy win."

Strickland scored 17 points and Richard Hamilton added 15 off the bench for the Wizards, who have lost three of four and eight of 10.

Atlanta took control with a 20-5 run to close the second period. Washington shot just 32 percent (13-of-41) in the first half.

The Wizards closed the deficit to 50-35 on a basket by Hamilton in the first minute of the third quarter. But they got no closer and Wright's basket gave the Hawks a 73-49 lead entering the final period.

"Lorenzen came out and played great," Hawks center Dikembe Mutomb š…¥‘¹ "They left him just wide open, and he went and made a bunch of layups to give us a huge lead and to win this ballgame easily."

Matt Maloney and Larry Robinson scored 11 points each for the Hawks, who shot 48 percent (39-of-81) and held a 50-38 edge on the boards.

"Matt hit some shots, Larry hit some shots, JT made some nice plays," Kruger said. "We had a lot of different guys going and good crash-the-board help."

Mitch Richmond and Felipe Lopez scored 11 points each for the Wizards, who shot 33 percent (27-of-82).

Washington was without forward Tyrone Nesby, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers for forwards Cherokee Parks and Obinna Ekezie earlier in the day.
