Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- David Wesley scored a season-high 32 points and Baron Davis added 14 and tied a career high with 11 assists, leading the Charlotte Hornets to a 103-79 rout of the shorthanded Toronto Raptors.

Jamal Mashburn added 18 points for the Hornets, who went on a 9-0 run early in the first quarter, built a double-digit lead in the second period and easily held off any threats by the Raptors in the second half.

Charlotte won its sixth straight since a team meeting that took place following a 96-89 loss at Detroit. The Hornets have scored at least 100 points in five of the six games.

"It's been nice," Wesley said. "We're doing all the right things now. We found a way to put the ball in the basket. We're flowing pretty nice."

It was Charlotte's second blowout of Toronto in nine days. On November 20, the Hornets crushed the Raptors, 100-64, at Air Canada Centre for their biggest win of the season.

Antonio Davis scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Raptors, who fell for the second straight game without superstar forward Vince Carter. Alvin Williams scored 12 and Corliss Williamson and Mark Jackson added 11 apiece for Toronto.

The Hornets never trailed after P.J. Brown followed Mashburn's missed jumper and was fouled with 7:56 left in the first period. Brown hit the free throw, starting Charlotte on a 9-0 run, capped by Wesley's jumper that made it 15-6 with 6:13 left.

"My biggest fear was that we were going to take them lightly without Vince," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "I was proud of our guys for stepping up to the challenge. ... Baron is running the club extremelyº•±±right now. Wesley found his niche offensively during this streak."

Wesley's hot hand helped the Hornets maintain at least a five-point lead the rest of the quarter, which ended with them up 27-20. Wesley hit 4-of-6 from the field for eight points and also dished out four assists in the first 12 minutes.

Wesley scored 10 points and Eddie Robinson added nine in the second quarter as the Hornets stretched their lead to as much as 22 points.

The Raptors shot just 30 percent (16-of-53) from the field in the half, while the Hornets hit 66 percent (25-of-38), taking a 58-40 lead into the locker room.

"We were out of sync tonight," Raptors guard Alvin Williams said. "We have to look at the game tape to see why our offense was as bad as it was. Charlotte executed well and made shots. We didn't play well as a team on both ends of the court."

In the second half, Toronto got no closer than 68-58, when Jackson hit a 3-pointer with 3:42 left in the third quarter. Wesley scored back-to-back baskets and Davis hit a 17-footer, and the Hornets were up 74-58 with 1:39 left in the period.

"We didn't play with any emotion," Raptors forward Charles Oakley said. "We have individuals who need to take responsibility and know where they should be offensively."

With Carter out of the lineup, the Raptors shot just 34 percent (32-of-94) from the field and only went to the free-throw line 18 times.

"The problem could be that we got in after 2 a.m. last night, but no excuses," Toronto coach Lenny Williams. "We did execute on offense. We saw only one option and then some guys forgot."

Carter, who is second in the NBA at 27.5 points points per game, has been sidelined with an injured tendon in his left knee. Before he went down, Toronto had won three straight.
