Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace is the angriest man in basketball, but luckily for the Portland Trail Blazers, he also is one of the best.

Forced to come off the bench due to a team-imposed punishment and slapped with his ninth technical foul in the fourth quarter, Wallace still scored 28 points to lead the Trail Blazers to a 95-84 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Wallace, the owner of the NBA record with 38 technicals a season ago, was not in Portland coach Mike Dunleavy's starting lineup for disciplinary reasons. Unfazed, the 6-11 power forward buried 12-of-17 shots, 3-of-4 free throws and grabbed eight rebounds to give the Blazers their 10th straight home win against the Mavericks.

"Rasheed missed shootaround today," Dunleavy said. "It was an excused absence, but the guys that don't (make shootaround), I don't start them. He obviously learned his lesson, didn't he?"

Steve Smith scored 19 points for Portland, which has won five of six and bounced back nicely from Tuesday's 105-93 home loss to Seattle. The Blazers were without key reserve Bonzi Wells, who earned a one-game suspension from the NBA for flipping his headband at an official against the SuperSonics.

Courtney Alexander scored a season-high 20 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 17 for the Mavs, who were without coach Don Nelson. Nelson is back in Dallas having a biopsy on his prostate.

"We all want Nellie back," Dallas guard Steve Nash said. "He does a fantastic job. But (assistant) Del (Harris) did a good job. Players have to get it done in this league. We certainly didn't get it done tonight."

The Blazers also were missing center Arvydas Sabonis (knee), making Wallace's absence on the floor even more ominous in the early going. But Wallace checked in just over two minutes into the opening period and had a follow shot and a five-footer before capping a quarter-ending 12-0 run with a dunk that gave Portland a 27-19 lead.

"He's playing real well," Smith said of Wallace. "The guy's in a great rhythm. We're definitely going to him. He's making baskets. Anytime a guy shoots over 50 percent, you've got to keep going to him. He's just playing real well right now."

Dallas closed to 44-42 on two free throws by Alexander with just under two minutes left in the first half, but Wallace buried a seven-footer and a 3-pointer, helping Portland to a 52-45 halftime advantage.

Portland extended the lead to 79-68 entering the fourth quarter before WallX zthe final period with an 18-footer. After disagreeing with an official's call on a shot-clock violation moments later, Wallace fired the ball away and was hit with a technical. He committed a turnover on the ensuing possesion and stalked to the bench.

After cooling off, Wallace re-entered with 7:14 to play and scored eight points down the stretch as Portland held off the upstart Mavericks.

Nash scored 16 points and Michael Finley was limited to 10 as Dallas shot 41 percent (31-of-76) and yielded 25 points off 19 turnovers.

"They're a tough team," Nowitzki said. "They are one of the best teams in the West, that's for sure. But if we had played a little bit better -- we played terrible and we hung around until the fourth quarter until the end and we didn't take care of the ball enough."

Scottie Pippen scored 13 points for Portland, which shot 51 percent (38-of-74) and allowed just eight points off turnovers.

Dallas also was without guards Hubert Davis (groin) and Greg Buckner (foot).
