Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Karl Malone came up short, and for the first time in seven games, so did the Utah Jazz.

David Wesley nailed a game-tying 3-pointer and Jamal Mashburn hit five straight free throws in the final minute, lifting the Charlotte Hornets to a 94-89 victory over the Jazz, who had their winning streak snapped at six games.

Utah failed to close out a close game for the first time in three outings. Meanwhile, Malone, the hero in the last two victories, scored just 14 points, eight shy of the 22 he needed to move past Wilt Chamberlain into secoplace on the all-time scoring list.

Wesley, whose 3-pointer tied the score, 87-87, with 58 seconds left, finished with 30 points and hit 11-of-16 from the field.

"I'm still trying to figure out some shots that I missed," Wesley said. "I have to let go, and I'm getting better. Late in the games Mash or I will be that guy."

Mashburn hit just 6-of-22 shots but finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. Mashburn went 9-of-9 from the line, including the five straight down the stretch that fueled a 10-2 charge in the final 58 seconds.

"Charlotte outworked us all night long," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "Wesley had a big night and there was not much we can do on him. We tried to outscore them and failed to pass the ball like we are accustomed to doing. We really did not make the extra pass and we are usually better at that. Charlotte caught the ball where they wanted to and was able to score."

The Jazz never led by more than seven points, while the Hornets' biggest advantage was six. The score was tied nine times and the lead changed hands seven times.

Bryon Russell scored 24 points to lead the Jazz and John Stockton added 11 and 10 assists. John Starks scored just seven points, but his first 3-pointer of the game with 2:49 left in the first quarter, gave him 10,000 points in his career.

"It's just a milestone," Starks said. "You play this game to win ballgames. I've never been a big stat guy."

P.J. Brown finished with just six points and four rebounds but the defensive specialist had to get a lot of the credit for containing Malone.

"I have to bring my `A' game whether a record is on the line or not," he said. "Karl Malone is probably the greatest power forward of all time."

Malone, who has 31,412 points, will have to wait until his next game to pass Chamberlain. If Malone, who is averaging 23.2 points a game, does score at least eight in his next game, he will move ahead of Chamberlain on the scoring list as he ties Dale Ellis for 10th place on the games played list (1,209).

Utah lost for the first time since a 107-98 setback to Dallas on November 20 and slipped to 7-2 on the road.

Charlotte won its fourth straight at home and seventh in eight overall. It improved to 6-2 in games decided by five points or less.

"I think we got out-executed down the stretch," Malone said. "We had the opportunity to get rebounds toward the end of the game and didn't do it."

Malone's two free throws with 1:21 left gave the Jazz an 87-84 lead.

Mashburn missed a driving layup but grabbed his own rebound and passed out to Brown, who found Wesley alone at the top of the key for thYz3-pointer.

"It's important against a good team to make the plays down the stretch and hit your free throws," Wesley said. "I think we did an excellent job of that tonight against a very good Utah team."

Jacque Vaughn tried to put Utah back on top with a 3-pointer but missed and Brown grabbed the rebound. He got the ball to Davis, who was fouled on a layup attempt and hit two free throws, putting the Hornets on top with 31 seconds left.

"I guess Baron was the hero for us tonight," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "I tried to call a timeout and he drove to the hoop and got the free throws, which was a huge play for us."

Wesley blocked Stockton's layup and Danny Manning missed an 11-footer in the lane. Mashburn got the rebound and after Starks fouled him, he hot both free throws, putting Charlotte up by four.

Stockton brought back the Jazz with a driving layup with 10 seconds left but Manning was whistled for a foul before the Hornets could inbound the ball and Mashburn again hit from the line.

When Charlotte got the ball in, Mashburn was fouled again, and again stroked both shots, putting the Hornets on top by five with 8.5 seconds to play.

Stockton tried a 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left, but Hersey Hawkins ran down the rebound.
