Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Coach Don Nelson returned to the Dallas bench in a familiar venue and had to like what he saw.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 24 points and Michael Finley recorded his first triple-double of the season as Nelson's Mavericks posted a 97-78 victory over his former team, the Golden State Warriors.

Nelson, who coached at Golden State from 1988-1995, missed Thursday's 95-84 loss at Portland after undergoing a biopsy for a swollen prostate. Tonight, he returned to the sidelines to see his team win their sixth straight meeting with Golden State.

"Well, I'll feel real good when I get the results on the biopsy," Nelson said. "I would say we were worried about this game. This was a game we thought we should win but we had to plX^to do it though."

Finley had 13 points, a season-high 13 rebounds and a season-best 10 assists for his sixth triple-double of his career.

"I told him it was the ugliest triple double I have ever seen. But he definitely got it," Nelson said. "He was drawing the double teams and he's turned into quite a good passer off that double team. He got us some good looks but he wasn't that sharp to be honest with you."

Steve Nash scored 19 points and Shawn Bradley contributed 11 and 14 rebounds for Dallas, which has won six of its last eight games. The surprising Mavs are tied for second place with San Antonio, just two games back of Utah in the Midwest Division.

"I think we played well at the end of last season but everyone is a year older, more mature, and a year better," Nash said. "All the pieces improved collectively. Obviously we're improving as well."

Tonight was something of a homecoming for Nash, who went to college at Santa Clara.

"It's great to come back and see some old friends and familiar faces so it's a lot of fun for me."

Antawn Jamison collected 20 points and 11 rebounds as Golden State fell to 5-12 this season. Two nights after scoring 29 points, Larry Hughes contributed just 10 -- nearly eight off his season average.

"It seems like everytime we take a step forward, we take two or three back," Jamison said. "For us, we still have to stay positive. It's frustrating because we're a talented team and we have the talent to win a lot of games."

The Mavericks closed the first quarter with a 15-4 run to take a 30-13 advantage into the second quarter. Dallas' lead never dropped below 13 points and went as high as 20.

"In this game a bad first quarter and the next thing you know, we're in the hole," Jamison said. "So for us we've got to be more consistent with the way we play defense and offense and we've got to find our identity."

Howard Eisley gave the Mavs a 23-point bulge -- their largest lead of the game -- on a 3-pointer with 4:25 left in the contest.

"It was important to get off to a good start," said Eisley, who finished with 13 points, six assists, and five rebounds. "We set the tone for the game early. It was beneficial to sustain it for the whole game."

Courtney Alexander had 11 points and five rebounds off the bench for Dallas, which shot 45.2 percent (38-for-84) from the field, including nine 3-pointers.

Jamison and Hughes were the only Golden State players to score in double-figures. Chris Mills scored just eight points but grabbed 10 rebounds and Vinny Del Negro and rookie Marc Jackson contributed nine points apiece for the Warriors, who sha season-low 33 percent (30-for-91).
