Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The only good news for the New Jersey Nets is that they will not have to see Orlando's Tracy McGrady for another month.

McGrady scored a career-high 40 points as the Magic broke open the contest in the fourth quarter and completed a sweep of a home-and-home series with a 95-74 rout of the floundering Nets.

McGrady, who has played the last three games with a heavily bandagY bсhand to protect an infection, followed up a 31-point effort in Orlando's 83-80 triumph over New Jersey on Friday with an awesome display at Continental Airlines Arena.

"The hard thing in this league is to face the same team on back-to-back nights," McGrady said. "My jumper was on and I was feeling pretty good. I want to be a great player and I want to be a winner. I've put a lot of hard work in and it's paying off. It's my time now."

McGrady, who entered the game averaging 23.7 points, has averaged 33 since having to wear the bandage as a result of an infection.

"The bandage is giving me good luck," McGrady joked. "I might have to leave it on the rest of the season."

The talented swingman had 14 points and seven rebounds in the first quarter and added 10 in the final period, when the Magic outscored the Nets, 24-11.

"Last night, we played him pretty much straight up and he scored 31 points," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "Tonight we doubled him and he scored 40. He's an excellent player."

The teams do not meet again until January 2 in Orlando.

The optimism that surrounded the hiring of Scott over the summer is quicky dissipating for the Nets, whose losing streak reached seven games.

"All I can do is go back to the drawing board with my staff and start thinking about maybe changing the lineup," Scott said. "We've got to do something to get us out of this funk."

The Nets also received a scare in the second quarter, when leading scorer Stephon Marbury rolled his ankle on a drive to the basket. Marbury, who had to be helped off the court, returned in the second half but failed to score after pouring in 12 points in the opening period.

"I rolled it and sprained it, I had no explosion," Marbury said. "It was hurting before the game. I was probably about 75 percent but as the game went on, it loosened up and I felt good. It's not going to stop me from playing. I'll just have to deal with the pain."

"I know he's hurting. He wasn't able to turn the corner on our high pick and roll, so obviously that had a big effect on us," Scott said. He said it felt OK but I could see with five or six minutes left in the game that he wasn't Stephon."

Aaron Williams scored 14 points for New Jersey, which has not won since an 86-85 triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers on November 20.

The Nets, whose only lead came on the game's opening basket, drew within 59-56 when Johnny Newman sank two free throws with 4:21 left in the third quarter.

But McGrady drained a 20-footer and tipped in Darrell Armstrong's miss than followed a free throw by Newman with a short jumper that gave the Magic a 65-57 eV сthe 2:35 mark.

Orlando, which took a 71-63 advantage into the final period, scored 12 straight points early in the session to stretch the lead to 87-67 with 6:01 left.

Pat Garrity was the key figure in the run, nailing two 3-pointers and a 19-footer. McGrady accounted for the other four points during the surge.

The Magic took their largest lead at 95-71 on a fast-break layup by McGrady with 1:35 to play.

"He's really stepping to the forefront," assessed Armstrong on McGrady's progress. "He's the main focus of our offense. Teams have to double-team him and find a way to stop him but they still can't."

Garrity and John Amaechi scored 12 points apiece for Orlando, which shot 45 percent (41-of-91) from the floor and held a 50-43 rebounding edge.

Newman had 10 points and rookie Kenyon Martin added seven and 13 boards for the Nets, who shot 37 percent (26-of-70) and allowed 22 points off 18 turnovers.

"They just beat us every which way you could," Scott said. "I thought our guys came out in the first quarter with no effort and no intensity. I don't know if we think we are better than they are or what. We just didn't approach this game the way we should have, especially since we played them yesterday."
