Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Desperate to re-establish their dominance at home, the New York Knicks turned to Allan Houston, who seemed quite comfortable with the shooting backdrop at Madison Square Garden.

Houston scored 17 of his season high-tying 37 points in the fourth quarter when the Knicks pulled away for good, posting their 10th straight home win against the Minnesota Timberwolves, 100-90.

Houston led a season-best shooting performance by New York, hitting a startling 16-of-20 shots, including his last five. The All-Star guard made all three of his free throws and was 2-of-2 from 3-point range, lifting the Knicks to their third win in four games.

"It feels like you are in your own backyard," Houston said. "Just like when you were a kid and just pretending. There's no feeling like it in the world, when the crowd at the Garden starts cheering before you even touch the ball."

He had 26 points, eight rebounds and six assists in Friday's win at Chicago and scored 37 at Boston on November 10, establishing his Knicks career best.

"Give him the rock and let hi["ฝhis thing. That's what Jeff (coach Jeff Van Gundy) was telling us to do," Knicks guard Erick Strickland said. "Even when we had opportunities to run, we slowed up and gave Allan the ball. We went to Allan and he came through."

"We tried everything we could. We just couldn't stop him, Allan just caught fire," Minnesota guard Chauncey Billups said.

New York entered tonight just 4-4 at home, causing swingman Latrell Sprewell to berate his teammates for not giving their maximimum effort in front of the nightly sellout crowds at "The World's Most Famous Arena."

But the Knicks answered the call tonight, beating the Timberwolves for the 15th time in the last 18 meetings.

Kevin Garnett scored 21 points and Terrell Brandon added 18 and eight assists for Minnesota, which shot 44 percent (36-of-81) and scored 25 points off New York turnovers.

"He got hot really quick and by the time we tried to run people at him, he was already in his rhythm," Garnett said. "You saw tonight why Allan is one of the premier players in the league."

The Knicks finished a blistering 58 percent (37-of-64) from the floor and held a commanding 41-27 rebounding advantage.

Sprewell scored 17 points and Marcus Camby and Glen Rice added 10 apiece for New York, which never trailed in front of the 356th consecutive sellout crowd at the Garden.

Clinging to a 70-69 lead entering the final quarter, the Knicks put the ball in Houston's hands as often as possible and the All-Star guard did not let them down, making an assortment of pull-up jumpers and leaners in the lane. Houston had 20 first-half points but did not score in the third period.

Houston buried a 19-footer and a 21-footer on consecutive trips to give New York a 75-69 lead with 8:59 to play. Todd Day stemmed the tide with a 3-pointer but Houston continued his unconscious assault, drilling from 19 and 23 feet before Strickland's jumper made it 81-72 with 6:47 remaining.

Chris Childs hit two free throws, Kurt Thomas made a layup and Houston answered Wally Szczerbiak's jumper with a 24-footer from the left sideline, opening an 88-74 cushion with 5:16 left.

Two more jumpers by Houston and two free throws by the Olympian made it 94-79 with 2:56 remaining.

"The amazing thing is Terrell (Brandon) did a good job on him in the third quarter," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "When a guy gets into a rhythm like that, you have to try to get him off his rhtyhm a little bit. Every time we made a run, Houston had an answer for us."
