Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Antonio McDyess took advantage of the absence of Vin Baker. Nick Van Exel had no such luxury.

The red-hot McDyess collected 37 points and 17 rebounds and Van Exel thoroughly outplayed Gary Payton with a league season-high 20 assists as the Denver Nuggets defeated the Seattle SuperSonics, 103-92.

McDyess, who scored a season-high 40 points in a 109-105 home overtime loss to Houston on Thursday, worked over Jelani McCoy, who had been starting for Baker. McDyess made 16-of-26 shots and pulled down six offensive boards as Baker was sidelined with a right leg injury.

"I played well, excellent in the second half," McDyess said. "My confidence has really been high since the last game. I concentrate when I shoot the ball and the shots are going down. I've been doing better since I've been getting more minutes."

"I thought not having Vin Baker hurt them tonight," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "Without him, they had a real inability to guard Antonio."

Van Exel scored just five points but played an awesome floor game against the NBA's best defensive point guard. His assists were three more than Steve Nash of Dallas had against Utah on November 20.

"I don't think I've seY ́dominating a performance while shooting 2-for-7 as Nick had tonight," Issel said. "The 20 assists will show up on the stat sheet but his defense on Payton was tremendous."

"I just tried to contain him and get the ball out of his hands," Van Exel said. "I thought it was good team defense."

Van Exel shut down Payton, who averages 24.6 points per game but was limited to 14 on 7-of-25 from the field. He added eight assists and seven rebounds.

"Some days you just struggle," Payton said. "It just happens and this was one of those days."

Voshon Lenard scored a season-high 22 points, including a key 3-pointer down the stretch for the Nuggets, who got back on track. Denver has won six of its last seven home games and handed Seattle interim coach Nate McMillan his first loss in three games.

The SuperSonics trailed by 17 points in the third quarter but cut the deficit to 70-65 entering the final period. However, they could get no closer and failed to reach .500 for the first time since beating Denver in their second game of the season on November 1.

McMillan took over for Paul Westphal, who was fired Monday. "Mr. Sonic" posted impressive wins over Portland and the Los Angeles Lakers in his first two games.

"They just outworked us," McMillan said. "They whipped our butt in the paint. We'll never win a game giving up 21 offensive rebounds. The altitude took its toll."

"The style of ball Nate wants to play, we're not in good enough shape for, but we'll get there," Payton said.

Denver led by just five points entering the final period but jumpers by McDyess and George McCloud and two free throws by Keon Clark opened a 76-65 advantage with 9:49 remaining.

The SuperSonics closed to 97-92 with 1:26 left on consecutive 3-pointers by Rashard Lewis and Emanual Davis. But McDyess passed out of a double-team to Lenard, who nailed a 3-pointer with 1:08 to go.

Clark blocked a shot and McDyess found Lenard for another 3-pointer that sealed it with 36 seconds left.

"I told some of you I thought he could do that every night," Issel said of McDyess. "He is looking for his shot and passing out of the double-teams probably better than I have ever seen him do."

Raef LaFrentz had 11 points and nine rebounds and Clark added 10 and eight for the Nuggets, who shot 44 percent (42-of-96) from the floor and held a 57-45 rebounding edge.

Lewis scored 26 points and Davis added 14 for the Sonics, who shot 42 percent (36-of-86), including 10-of-23 from beyond the arc.

Denver took the lead for good at 5-3 on Lenard's 3-pointer 75 seconds into the game. McDyess scored 14 points in the first quarter, whi, *with the Nuggets holding a 30-19 lead.

Denver extended the advantage to 55-41 at halftime. McDyess scored eight points in the third period but his teammates managed just seven as Seattle got back into the game.
