Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce scored 25 points and Bryant Stith added 18 as the Boston Celtics stopped a two-game home losing streak with a 96-87 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Antoine Walker contributed 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Celtics, who led by as many as 16 points and never trailed in posting their first win at the FleetCenter since November 24 against Orlando.

The Celtics built a 71-59 lead after three quarters and extended it to 75-59 on a jumper by Pierce with 10:38 remaining. But Los Angeles got within six on four occasions, the last coming on two free throws by Corey Maggette with 56 seconds to play.

Boston put away the game as Eric Williams made 1-of-2 free throws with 50 seconds left, Pierce sank a pair from the line with 39 seconds to play and Doug Overton hit a 12-foot jumper with 12 seconds remaining to build a 96-85 advantage.

"At halftime we talked about what happened with the Vancouver game (a 98-87 loss November 26)," Pierce said. "We didn't want to play a second half like we did a week ago. We wanted to play tougher, stronger defense and force them into turnovers."

Lamar Odom scored 19 points on just 6-of-18 shooting and Maggette and rookie Quentin Richardson added 13 apiece for Los Angeles, which fell to 1-6 on the road. The Clippers have lost seven of eight overall and own the worst record in the Western Conference at 5-13.

"It's tough right now because we're in a stretch right now where we're losing a lot o :ͱ" Maggette said. "But I do think that we're learning. The second half today, we didn't give up. We just didn't make the shots late that we needed."

Boston entered the third quarter with a 54-39 advantage and grabbed its largest lead at 69-50 on two free throws by Walker with 2:48 to play. But the Clippers closed the quarter on a 9-2 run, capped by a jumper from Odom with four seconds remaining.

Odom was held to 5-of-15 from the field in the second half as Los Angeles shot 40 percent (17-of-42) over the last two quarters.

"The Celtics had a good game plan today," Odom said. "They defended well. I was able to get some shots off in the fourth, but it was tough all day."

Although the Celtics were outrebounded, 51-42, they limited the Clippers to 38 percent shooting (30-of-80) and forced 21 turnovers. Boston shot 43 percent (34-of-79), including 5-of-15 from 3-point range.

Boston limited Los Angeles to 30 percent (7-of-23) shooting in the first quarter and took a 25-18 lead. Pierce scored seven of his 16 first-half points in the second quarter and Stith also had seven points, including a jumper with 33 seconds left to help the Celtics build their largest lead of the first half, 54-38, with 33 seconds to play.

"I think we're starting to play better and better defense every game," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "I thought we did a good job at the guard position today. Randy (Brown) and Bryant did a good job on their perimeter shooters."

The Clippers made 34 percent (13-of-38) of their shots in the first half and committed 14 turnovers.
