Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Andre Miller scored a season-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Cleveland Cavaliers snap a four-game losing streak by defeating the Charlotte Hornets, 71-66.

The Cavaliers (10-7) shut down Jamal Mashburn as they reclaimed first place in the Central Division from the Hornets (11-8), who have dropped two of three following a six-game winning streak.

"It wasn't pretty." Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "But a win like this gets the monkey off your back. I thought we did a great job on Mashburn and (Elden) Campbell, considering the last game in Charlotte. Each guy that defended Mashburn took it as a challenge and we made him take a lot of tough shots."

Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored six of Cleveland's final seven points in the last five minutes. He scored seven of his 11 points in the fourth quarter and also pulled down 10 rebounds.

With 5:31 to play, Hornets rookie Jamaal Magloire hit a short jumper to tie it at 64-64, capping a 19-3 burst. Just 19 seconds later, Ilgauskas put back his missed layup to put Cleveland up two. He added a turnaround jumper for a four-point lead with 4:14 left.

Ilgauskas was called for goaltending on Baron Davis with 3:48 to play but responded with a short jumper for a 70-66 lead with 3:16 remaining.

The Hornets missed their last nine shots -- four by Mashburn -- and Miller hit 1-of-2 free throws with 14 seconds left for the final margin.

Mashburn burned Cleveland for 30 points in the first meeting between these teams but shot just 3-for-17 from the field. He was benched just four minutes into the third quarter after misfiring on his 10th shot of the game. He averages 20 points per game.

"(Mashburn) was just making his shots in Charlotte and the ones he was making, he was missing tonight," Silas said. "He had the same looks that he had in Charlotte."

"They played well and made some big plays at the right time," Mashburn said. "I think they double-teamed me a lot more. Every time I caught the ball, I was looking at Lamond Murray and the big fella (Ilgauskas), but I have to play out of that and continue to work at it."

Murray also scored 30 points in Cleveland's loss to Charlotte on November 25. He scored nine on 3-for-12 from the field tonight.

Campbell scored 16 points and David Wesley added 14 for Charlotte, which shot a franchise record-low 30 percent (24-of-80).

"We're going to have bad shooting nights. It's the nature of basketball and it makes basketball so much fun," Mashburn said. "If we could've pulled it out, it would have been a good one, but you can't take anything away from the Cavs."

Robert Traylor's hook opened the final period and gave the Cavs a 61-45 lead. The Hornets went on a 19-3 run featuring a pair of 3-pointers by little-used veteran Hersey Hawkins to forge a 64-64 tie with 5:14 left.

"We were lucky tonight," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "Hawk came in and made some shots for us, but normally our first five have to carry us."
