Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Steve Francis scored a career-high 36 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Houston Rockets continued their dominance of the Dallas Mavericks with a 109-102 victory.

"I just took what the defense gave me." Francis said. "I wanted to be aggressive. I didn't know that I had my career high but I knew I was close."

Shandon Anderson had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Rockets, who have won 15 of the last 17 meetings in the intrastate rivalry.

"Things were open for us tonight." Anderson said. "We were getting out and got a lot of fast breaks tonight. With me, Steve and Cuttino (Mobley) out there, anyone who rebounds the ball can push it for us."

Anderson's short jumper made it 102-92 with 2:15 to play. After 3-pointers by Howard Eisley and Michael Finley and a free throw by Hubert Davis cut the deficit to three points, Moochie Norris made a layup and Mobley sank two free throws to give the Rockets a 106-99 advantage with 22 seconds to play.

The Rockets scored their last five points at the line as the Mavericks missed five of their last six shots. They are 5-0 when scoring at least 100 points and had a balanced attack with six players scoring in double digits.

Mobley scored 14 points and Norris added 13. They were the only bench players to score for Houston, which played without flu-ridden forward Maurice Taylor.

"This was a huge win for us." Houston coach Rudy Tomjonavich said. "We could have just showed up because we had a lot of guys sick and we were playing against a team that's very hard to defend, but we found a way to get it done."

Dirk Nowitzki scored a career-high 35 points and added 12 rebounds for Dallas, which shot 47 percent (37-of-79) from the field but was outrebounded, 40-34.

The loss marked Dallas' first back-to-back defeats this season.

"It was a big game for me but it really doesn't matter because we lost." Nowitzki said. "I just made my jumpers. This is still a tough loss for us."

Finley added 22 points on 10-for-20 shooting for the Mavs, who received just 12 points from their reserves.

Finley gave Dallas its first and only lead of the second half with a hook at the 6:27 mark of the third quarter, making it 65-63.

Eisley scored a career-high 24 points for Dallas. His jumper with 4:18 to go in the third period cut the deficit to 71-70. But that was as close as Dallas would get for the remainder of the game.
