Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Michael Dickerson returned from an eight-game absence to score 17 points and shut down Jerry Stackhouse as the Vancouver Grizzlies held off the Detroit Pistons, 91-83.

Hobbled by a sprained ankle since mid-November, the 6-5, 190-pound Dickerson looked healthy tonight. He hit 7-of-15 shots in 34 minutes off the bench, but more importantly, the third-year guard helped lock up league's second-leading scorer.

"I felt good, other than being a little winded, but I'm the type of player that can play winded," Dickerson said. "We double-teamed Stackhouse and got the ball out of his hands. I feel comfortable with this team. I've been with them in the good times and the bad."

Stackhouse entered tonight averaging 28.4 points per contest but made just 5-of-12 shots for 11 points and did not get to the line until the final minute as Dickerson made things difficult for the explosive swingman.

"Obviously having Michael Dickerson back makes us a different ballclub," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said. "I think one thing he does is something like Stackhouse is going to come back at you, Michael can go right back at him. Stackhouse had to play some defense as well."

Stackhouse did not score in the fourth quarter but did tie a career high with 11 assists.

"I didn't think they took me out of the game," Stackhouse said. "I was finding the open man, we just didn't make the plays tonight. Mike plays with a lot of energy and excitement. He brings confidence to their team."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 18 points and Isaac Austin added 15 and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who were 2-6 in Dickerson's absence.

"I thought he brought a lot back to the team that wasn't there before," Abdur-Rahim said of Dickerson.

Chucky Atkins scored 13 points for the Pistons, who had their season-high three-game winning streak snapped.

Othella Harrington scored 13 points as did Mike Bibby, who also handed out a season high-tying 12 assists for the Grizzlies. Vancouver shot 47 percent (36-of-76) and forced 17 turnovers.

"I've been waiting for him (Dickerson) to come back," Bibby said. "He kind of left me hanging. We tried to get everyone involved and share the basketball tonight. We played team defense and did a hell of a job on Stackhouse."

Bryant Reeves scored a season-high 10 points off the bench and grabbed several key rebounds down the stretch as the Grizzlies improved to 3-3 in their last six games.

Joe Smith and Jerome Williams scored 12 points apiece and Dana Barros added 11 off the bench for the Pistons, who shot 47 percent (36-of-78) and held a 41-38 rebounding edge.

Dickerson scored four points during an 8-2 run that opened the second half, putting Vancouver in front 50-44 with 9:37 left in the third quarter. Detroit would tie the contest on three occasions but was unable to move past the Grizzlies.

"I thought Vancouver played well. They had lots of energy, they shot the ball well," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "They got a lift from Dickerson coming back. This is a much better team with him in the lineup."

It was a 9-0 run to close the first half that got the Pistons even at 42-42 and Jud Buechler's 22-footer with 7:38 to play made it 71-71. But Dickerson answered with a 15-footer and six-footer to give Vancouver a four-point lead with 6:31 remaining.

Williams made an 11-footer to get the Pistons back within 80-77 with 3:53 left but Dickerson made a free throw to spark a decisive 7-0 burst that Harrington capped with a layup with 1:49 to go, making it 87-77.
