Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- When David Wesley leads the Charlotte Hornets in scoring, he leads them to victory.

Wesley scored nine of his 32 points in the final 3 1/2 minutes as the Hornets used a strong fourth quarter to rally past the Indiana Pacers, 91-88.

Although not the first option in Charlotte's offense, Wesley has been the most effective. He has led the team in scoring in six games this season and the Hornets have won all six.

"We have a lot of guys who can be the go-to guy. It's not just me," Wesley said. "It will be a good season if I can keep this up. Right now, everything is feeling pretty good. My confidence is pretty high."

Wesley made 13-of-20 shots and added eight assists. The 6-1 guard turned it on down the stretch, scoring the last seven points in a 10-0 surge and adding two free throws that turned out to be the winning points.

"It depends on the situation. Tonight, I was the guy," Wesley said. "Tonight, I was hitting shots so I got plays called for me."

"He's taking them and he's making them," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "When he's getting the ball off quickly, he's hard to stop. He was in a zone tonight."

Charlotte also shut down Indiana in the fourth quarter. The Pacers squandered a nine-point lead as they missed 10 of their first 11 shots in the period.

Jamal Mashburn collected 26 points and nine rebounds and Elden Campbell added 11 and 11 for the Hornets, who won for the eighth time in 10 games despite the ejection of Silas.

The coach earned his first tossing with the Hornets when he received technical fouls five seconds apart midway through the second quarter. Assistant Jerry Eaves took over.

"It kind of lit a fire under us," Hornets guard Baron Davis said. "He felt he had to stand up for his players. We appreciate that and we responded."

"Coach Eaves did a great job. The guys were really inspired," Silas said.

Reggie Miller scored 23 points and Jalen Rose added 18 for the Pacers, who shot 3-of-16 in the fourth quarter and have lost eight of 11.

Derrick McKey, Austin Croshere and Miller missed potential tying 3-pointers on Indiana's final possession.

"We have to come up with big plays down the stretch," Miller said. "We lost our composure and looked lost the last few minutes. It's frustrating not being able to execute when we need to make big plays."

Indiana led 75-66 entering the fourth quarter and still held an 82-77 advantage after Miller's three free throws with 5:13 to play. But Mashburn made a 3-pointer to start the 10-0 run and Wesley took over from there.

After four offensive rebounds by Charlotte, Wesley scored on a turnaround jumper and was fouled. His free throw gave the Hornets the lead for good at 83-82 with 3:31 remaining.

He added a jumper with 2:12 left and a fadeaway 20-footer after a miss by Miller, giving Charlotte an 87-82 bulge with 1:22 to go.

"I didn't really warm up tonight like I usually do, but it's not hard to focus when you're playing Indiana," Wesley said.

Croshere and Miller made 3-pointers around two free throws by Wesley, cutting the deficit to 89-88 with 15 seconds left. Mashburn was fouled on a drive and sank both with 15 seconds left, setting up the final possession.

"Reggie got a good look at it, it just fell kinda short," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "We wanted to take a quick two, but if the three was available, we were going to take it."

Davis scored nine points and P.J. Brown grabbed nine rebounds for the Hornets, who shot 47 percent (35-of-74) and held a 44-38 edge on the glass, including a 13-9 edge on the offensive end.

Jermaine O'Neal had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Travis Best scored 11 points for the Pacers, who shot 40 percent (29-of-72), including 9-of-20 from behind the arc.

Mashburn scored 15 points and Wesley added 13 in the first half. But Indiana grabbed a 50-46 lead and built the advantage to 10 points in the third quarter behind Rose, who scored 11 in the period.

"We started off bad. It was an uphill battle all the way," Brown said. "At one stretch, though, crucial plays one after another were going our way."
