Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Reserves Cedric Ceballos and A.C. Green sparked a second-quarter explosion and the Miami Heat showed off their newfound depth for the second straight night, cruising to a 95-78 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Ceballos, acquired from Detroit for a second-round pick on November 27, and Green, who scored 14 points at Atlanta on Wednesday, gave the Heat another much-needed lift.

Green scored a season-high 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Ceballos added 10 points as Miami snapped a four-game home losing streak and won its season-high third straight overall.

"The bench mob, we come in and play as hard as we can and try and get results," Ceballos said. "Bench mob -- that's what we're going to call each other. I just came up with that."

Ceballos may be surprised to find out that the Sacramento Kings have dubbed their reserve unit the same name last season. Regardless, the Heat had seven players in double figures Tuesday and six more tonight.

"We get everybody involved, then everybody feels good and has confidence when we come down the stretch of the game," Miami guard Eddie Jones said. "I think we need that in order to win."

Trailing 25-20 entering the second quarter, Miami went on a decisive 24-4 run to pull away for good. Backup point guard Anthony Carter and Anthony Mason started the burst with consecutive baskets before Ceballos hit a 16-footer.

Denver's Keon Clark answered with a basket but Miami took the lead for good when Carter hit a 13-footer and Ceballos added a layup and 20-footer to make it 32-27 with 7:34 left in the first half.

"We have an advantage sitting down because you watch and see how the flow of the game is going and then you can see what's really missing," Green said. "I think that's one of the things Cedric, (Carter) and I were talking about on the sidelines."

Clark made a layup before the Heat reeled off the next 12 points, six from Green and Ceballos, and extended the margin to 44-29 3:28 before intermission.

"The second quarter was very frustrating," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "We worked hard and banged in the first quarter and built up a five- or six-point lead. The bottom line is the Heat got physical with us and we didn't respond to it. We backed away from the physical aspect of the game and they took us out of what we were trying to do."

"The last two games, the two ACs (Green and Carter) have given us a great lift off the bench," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "It is the first time I have come in here at home and there hasn't been a crisis. We didn't blow an 85-point lead."

Brian Grant had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Jones scored 14 points, Tim Hardaway 13 and Anthony Mason 12 for Miami, which held the Nuggets to a season low-tying total.

Antonio McDyess scored 15 points for the Nuggets, who fell to 2-6 on the road.

"It's tough to win on the road for this team. It's like a jinx for us," McDyess said. "They came out and played physical and we just laid down."

Clark scored 12 points and Nick Van Exel added 11 for Denver, which shot 37 percent (30-of-81), was beaten 48-41 on the boards and yielded 26 points off turnovers. The Nuggets boast a stellar 8-2 record at the Pepsi Center but clearly are an inferior team away from home.

Leading 53-35 at the half, the Heat maintained their 18-point advantage entering the fourth quarter before pouring it on.

Robert Pack got the Nuggets within 15 with a pair of free throws early in the final period, but Green hit a six-foot hook shot, Jones made two free throws and Grant hit a 19-footer.

Jones followed with a jumper and a technical free throw, Green connected from 21 feet and Grant added a layup as Miami opened its biggest lead, 87-61, with 6:42 to play.
