Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Bryon Russell scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half and the Utah Jazz continued their domination of the Vancouver Grizzlies with a 98-87 victory.

Russell scored 10 points in the third quarter and eight more in the fourth period as the Jazz broke open a close contest and won for the eighth time in nine games.

Karl Malone scored 18 points and John Stockton added 13 and 13 assists for Utah, which improved to 15-4 and moved past the Philadelphia 76ers for the best record in the NBA.

"I think the team had great energy," Malone said. "I think guys played really well."

On Tuesday, Malone moved past Wilt Chamberlain into second place on the all-time scoring list off a pass from Stockton, the NBA's all-time assists leader.

Since Vancouver entered the NBA in 1995, it has been overpowered by Utah. The Jazz are 19-1 all-time against the Grizzlies, who dropped the first 17 in the all-time series until a stunning win here on January 26, 2000.

"This team, Vancouver, beat us badly last year in our own building, so I don't think it was a question of not being up," Stockton said. "We might not have played as well as we could have from the start, but I thought our concentration mostly was there and we were able to sustain that at least through the second half."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 21 points and Mike Bibby added 18 for the Grizzlies, who failed in a bid for consecutive victories for the first time since November 6-8.

"They do what they do best," Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe said. "They executed, hit big shots. They hit every open shot that we didn't contest. But that's what they do."

Vancouver led for much of the first half and still was even at 39-39 on Bibby's 20-footer with 1:01 left. A 3-pointer by Danny Manning on the next possession gave Utah the lead for good.

The Jazz held a 44-41 halftime edge and Russell had a 3-pointer in a 9-2 surge that opened the third quarter. Malone's jumper made it 53-43 with 8:59 remaining.

Another 3-pointer by Russell and a basket by Olden Polynice widened the lead to 15 points before the Grizzlies closed to 68-60 entering the final period.

A jumper and two free throws by Bryant Reeves made it 70-64 with 10:16 to play but Russell answered with a layup and a foul shot. Malone had a three-point play and Russell dunked in an 8-0 spurt that gave Utah an 88-70 lead with 4:45 to go.

"The fourth quarter is really what got us going," Malone said. "I think guys just did what we needed to do down the stretch. We passed the basketball to the open guy, made some shots."

Manning scored nine points and Greg Ostertag pulled down nine rebounds for the Jazz, who shot 49 percent (40-of-82) from the field and forced 25 turnovers.

"Our guys were alive tonight. We were a lot more alive than I've seen so far," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "They had (25) turnovers in the game."

Reeves had season highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who shot 44 percent (29-of-66) and held a 39-31 edge on the boards.

"Turnovers were a problem," Reeves said. "We were still in the game. We were only down three coming in the third quarter. We kind of dug ourselves a hole, though."
