Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Gary Payton collected 25 points and 10 assists and Shaquille O'Neal set an NBA record for free-throw futility as the Seattle SuperSonics snapped the Los Angeles Lakers' 10-game home winning streak, 103-95.

Payton had a pivotal three-point play as the SuperSonics beat the defending NBA champion Lakers for the second time in as many games this season. Seattle center Patrick Ewing had 10 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks, including a pair of key rejections down the stretch.

Los Angeles managed just one basket over the final five minutes until a garbage 3-pointer by Isaiah Rider with 9.5 seconds left. The Lakers also were undone by O'Neal, who missed all 11 of his free throws.

"Obviously his free-throw shooting really hurt us," Laker coach Phil Jackson said. "Shaq slipped back to a position where he was shooting well for a couple of games and now fell back again. It's unfortunate for him. I know that's a big blow for him."

The previous NBA record for most free throws with none made in a game was 10, set by Wilt Chamberlain with the Philadelphia Warriors against Detroit on November 4, 1960.

One of O'Neal's misses would have pulled the Lakers within 92-91 with 5:25 to play. Los Angeles did not score again from the field until O'Neal's hook shot with 1:33 to go.

"It was a key factor," Payton said. "If he would have made them, it probably would have been a different ball game. Unfortunately, he didn't make them and you know, that's good for us."

Ewing blocked Brian Shaw's shot with 2:45 to go and the Sonics holding a six-point lead. Less than a minute later, he had a block of Kobe Bryant's corner shot, leading to Payton's three-point play that made it 99-90 with 1:39 left.

"Huge," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said of Ewing's defense down the stretch. "Big, big blocks. Big fella really did what we brought him here to do."

O'Neal had 26 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots but his free-throw percentage dropped to .384. Rider scored 16 points off the bench for the Lakers.

The Lakers converted Seattle's seven turnovers in the first half into 14 points.

Bryant had led the Lakers in scoring in 10 of the last 11 games, taking over the league scoring lead. He tallied a career-high 51 points Wednesday against Golden State but managed just 19 on 8-of-25 shooting tonight. He did not score in the final period of play, collecting just five points in the third quarter.

"Obviously you get up for a team like the Lakers, they're the World Champions," Baker said. "It's always great when you can come out on your home court and beat the World Champions and then win it on their floor as well."

Rashard Lewis scored 20 points and Vin Baker added 15 for the Sonics, who had five players in double figures and shot 51 percent (39-of-76) from the field.

Seattle made 21-of-34 free throws while Los Angeles hit just 5-of-18.

Rookie Mike Penberthy's 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer gave Los Angeles a 57-57 tie, its first since 2-2. The Lakers used a 13-3 spurt to get back in the game in the second quarter.
