Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers can only hope they were getting a glimpse of the future.

Kevin Garnett scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Wally Szczerbiak added 19 and 12 for the Minnesota Timberwolves, who ran the young Clippers off the court in an 85-73 victory.

Szczerbiak, a second-year forward out of Miami of Ohio, has averaged 17.3 points per game over the last three and the Timberwolves have won them all.

With a core of young players that have developed together, the Timberwolves overcame their dismal shooting with high-energy defense and a crisp offense that committed just eight turnovers.

Despite shooting just 38 percent (31-of-82) from the field and being edged in rebounding, 52-49, Minnesota led throughout and was never threatened after Los Angeles was within five points midway through the second quarter.

"We're moving the ball better," Szczerbiak said. "We're sharing with each other and getting guys touches. It's a great opportunity to make shots. ... The more guys that get touches, it fuels their offensive part of the game. It's been happening more lately and that leads to easy victories."

The Wolves racked up 21 assists and committed just eight turnovers while the Clippers had 16 turnovers and just 11 assists.

"I liked our energy," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "I thought we played good defensively. We played aggressively. We really moved the ball. We just missed some open shots we don't normally miss."

The Clippers have a core of talented young players, too, but have a history of losing players as soon as they begin to get a bit of polish and experience, or as soon as they become free agents.

Rookie Quentin Richardson led the Clippers with 12 points, Corey Maggette scored 11 and Michael Olowokandi added 10 and 15 rebounds while rookie Keyon Dooling dished out seven assists.

"We're just not executing -- running our offense," said Lamar Odom, who was held to nine points and shot just 4-of-13 from the field. "We're not getting what we want right now. It wasn't our game tonight. We weren't on top of what we wanted to do, offensively and defensively, and I guess we paid for that."

The Timberwolves broke out to a 16-6 advantage when Terrell Brandon hit a jumper with 6:32 left in the first quarter.

Los Angeles got back within 22-19 on a fastbreak layup by Dooling with 9:17 to go in the second quarter but Minnesota answered with a 6-0 run, capped by Szczerbiak's jumper with seven minutes left.

A minute later, the Clippers mounted their last challenge, getting within 28-23 on a free throw by rookie Darius Miles. But the Timberwolves closed the first half on a 16-8 run and scored the first five points of the second half to break open the game.

Chauncey Billups' free throw with 10:28 left in the third quarter gave the Wolves a 49-31 lead, their largest margin to that point.

When the Clippers edged to within 52-37 late in the third quarter, Szczerbiak broke out for back-to-back fastbreak dunks that seemed to take the life out of Los Angeles, which was playing the final game of a six-game road trip.

Terrell Brandon had 15 points and 10 assists for his second double-double of the season and second in two games for the Wolves.
