Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- When the Utah Jazz play the Golden State Warriors two things are certain: the Jazz win and Karl Malone leads the team in scoring.

Malone had 25 points and eight rebounds and Bryon Russell added 23 and seven as the Jazz defeated the Warriors for the 17th straight time, 125-114.

"Everybody's happy when you score that many points because when you're scoring that many points, you don't have to guard anybody," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said.

Malone connected on 11-of-20 shots and also had six assists for Utah, which shot 54 percent (44-of-81) and won for the ninth time in 10 games. The Jazz (16-4) remained tied with Philadelphia for the league's best record.

"You can't give up 114 points and expect to win all the time," Malone said. "We are playing pretty good basketball right now and finding ways to win but we really need to take care of things defensively or we could lose those games as easily as we win them."

Utah, which has won 22 of the last 23 games in the series, has not lost to the Warriors since a 93-82 setback in Golden State on April 14, 1996, when Antoine Carr scored 20 points and Malone had 19. Malone has led the Jazz in scoring in each of the last 17 victories.

Larry Hughes scored 27 points and Antawn Jamison added 26 and 10 rebounds for Golden State, which has lost four of its last five games. Jamison has 44 points in his last two games following consecutive 51-point outings.

"It's been a pretty good run this week but you can't expect to score 50 points every game, not when you're going up against guys like Shaquille (O'Neal) and Karl," Jamison said. "We were able to hang with them most of the game, but we weren't playing with a full deck tonight and as the game wore on we had to lay off them because we got into foul trouble and didn't have anyone on the bench to come in."

Rookie Marc Jackson had a season-high 20 points and Mookie Blaylock added 19 off the bench for the Warriors, who shot 50 percent (45-of-90).

"They shot 50 percent in the ballgame and you know they had layups and open shots and when they made any kind of penetration they either made the layup or we fouled them," Sloan said.

Blaylock hit a 20-footer that gave Golden State a 103-100 edge with 6:41 to go. But Malone responded with a 19-footer that triggered a 10-0 burst to put the Jazz ahead for good. Four different players scored for Utah and Danny Manning capped the surge with a pair of free throws for a 110-103 advantage with 4:20 left.

"At the end and in the middle of the fourth quarter, they kind of got them a little cushion and after that, the game was pretty much over," Hughes said. "We just didn't have enough left to come back on them."

Manning had nine points in 19 minutes as Utah's bench outscored Golden State's, 50-29.

The Warriors managed to close within 113-109 on a pair of free throws by Jamison with 3:16 to go. Manning answered with a short jumper and John Stockton made one free throw for a 116-109 advantage with 2:50 left.

Stockton finished with 13 points and 14 assists. He scored his 17,000th career point on his second of two free throws with 10:50 left in the third.

Malone scored 13 points and reserve Quincy Lewis added 10 of his 13 in the first half when the Jazz took a 67-65 lead into the locker room.

Each team shot 50 percent from the field in the third quarter, leaving the score tied at 91-91.
