Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- As long as Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley are playing, it does not matter who is coaching the Dallas Mavericks.

Nowitzki scored 31 points and Finley added 21 as the Mavericks began life without Don Nelson and a six-game road trip with a 99-73 victory over the reeling New Jersey Nets.

"I really do not think some of our guys are ready for the type of game these guys possess," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "Our guys are not used to guarding someone as mobile as he (Nowitzki) is."

Nowitzki made 9-of-13 shots, including 4-of-6 3-pointers. He scored 13 points in the first quarter, when Dallas took the lead for good, and 10 more in the third period, when the Mavericks took control.

"You try to jump on them early and let them know that we came to play," Nowitzki said. "We are a good road team and just have to do it every night."

Finley scored 17 points in the first half, primarily on jumpers. He made 9-of-17 shots to power hot-shooting Dallas, which made 53 percent (37-of-70) from the field.

"We came out tonight with the right attitude and that attitude, especially on the road, is that you have to be aggressive," Finley said. "We came out that way from the jump ball and it was very beneficial for us."

The Mavs led by as many as 31 points as they won their third straight game and first without Nelson, who left the team indefinitely to seek treatment for prostate cancer. While Nelson spent the day in Salt Lake City meeting with doctors, assistant Del Harris took over the coaching duties.

"The team is counting on me and the coaching staff," Harris said. "They want to win just as much because this is what they do. I feel an extra obligation because I want to win anyway, just because it's me, but I want to win for my friend who built this team.

"Nellie and I are of the same mind: If you want to have a consistently good team, you have to start on the defensive end."

Howard Eisley scored 15 points before departing with a sprained ankle for Dallas, which beat New Jersey for the first time in six meetings.

Rookie Kenyon Martin scored 18 points for the Nets, who shot an awful 33 percent (24-of-73) and lost for the 10th time in 11 games. As they have all season, the Nets had trouble in the fourth quarter, making just 3-of-19 shots.

New Jersey was hoping for a possible return from Stephon Marbury but the star point guard sat out his fourth straight game with a sprained ankle.

The Nets also were trying to build on Friday's surprising win over Phoenix but the Mavs would not let them.

"Phoenix warned us," Nowitzki said. "We knew they have a couple of injuries but they are still a good team. You have to come here and take care of your business, play hard and come out and defend. We did a great job in all of that."

"We can not live on the laurels of last game and think everything is OK," Scott said. "We have to try and get another one and build on the one you just got."

The 7-foot Nowitzki had two 3-pointers in the first quarter, including one that gave Dallas a 30-20 lead in the final minute. Finley scored nine points in the period.

The Nets cut the deficit to 42-37 on a finger roll by Martin with 3:18 remaining in the second quarter. Eisley answered with a layup and Nowitzki made another 3-pointer to rebuild the lead to 10 points.

"I was wide open in all of my shots," Nowitzki said. "My teammates were finding me, Mike and Steve (Nash). That is my game."

New Jersey trailed 51-43 at halftime and got no closer in the second half. Another 3-pointer by Nowitzki gave Dallas a 58-45 lead with 9:38 left in the third quarter. He added a 20-footer and free throw to push the advantage to 72-53 with 3:07 to go.

The Mavs led 78-62 entering the fourth quarter and sealed it with a 12-0 spurt to open the period.

Sherman Douglas scored 13 points and rookie Stephen Jackson added 12 and 11 rebounds for the Nets, who were beaten on the boards, 44-33.

"When you execute offensively and shoot it in there at 52 percent and then hold the other team to 32 percent, you're probably going to win that game," Harris said.
