Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- On a day when Shaquille O'Neal validated his academic achievements, the Los Angeles Lakers continued their education of the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Playing without their superstar center, the Lakers received 19 points from Horace Grant and continued their mastery of Vancouver with a 98-76 rout.

O'Neal missed the game with permission from the Lakers to return to his alma mater of Louisiana State University, where he received a bachelor of arts degree. He will return to the club for Sunday's contest at Toronto.

However, the Lakers did not need the reigning NBA Most Valuable Player as they easily improved to 20-1 all-time againts the Grizzlies, including 11-0 in Los Angeles. The Lakers posted a 98-89 victory in Vancouver earlier this season.

"It's an opportunity, but it's not an easy one," said Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe about his team facing the Lakers without O'Neal. "This is still a good ballclub and they showed that.

"You would hope with a player of that magnitude out of the game that your players would be fired up ready to go at them. We had to deliver the first blow and let them know we were coming to play, and we didn't. In the first four possessions, we had two jump shot misses and two turnovers. A ballclub like this, they are too good, too experienced."

Greg Foster, who came into the contest averaging 2.3 points compared to 25.5 points for O'Neal, got the start in the middle and scored four points and grabbed seven rebounds in 28 minutes.

Grant also pulled down 13 rebounds and Kobe Bryant added 17 points for the Lakers, who never trailed and led by as many as 27 points in the second half.

"We have been kidding Horace the last couple of days about coming up empty and he took umbrage to that today and came out with the kind of energy we needed, he picked up the slack," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.

Grant commented on having the middle of the floor open without O'Neal in there.

"It felt pretty good," he said. "But I'd rather have a 7-1, 300-pound plus guy in there on my team, but he had to take care of something and we really got it for him."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Vancouver, which suffered its fifth straight loss.

Abdur-Rahim -- the Grizzlies' best player -- was critical of his his club's performance.

"I don't want to say we have to change the team and that guys have to be traded," he said. "It is the attitude, mentality, concentration and focus. We don't have the heart or the will to go out there and play competitively."

Overcoming the absence of O'Neal proved to be no problem for the Lakers, who built a 32-20 advantage with 7 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter on Isaiah Rider's driving layup.

An offseason acquistion that could prove be valuable when the playoffs roll around, Rider scored 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting in 24 minutes.

Grant picked up the scoring in the frontcourt without O'Neal, doing most of his damage from the outside. He scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the first half as Lakers' lead grew to 48-37.

The Grizzlies struggled from the floor in the first half, shooting just 37.5 percent (15-of-40). They finished at 40 percent (32-of-80) and also were outrebounded by a lopsided, 58-36.

Grant and Bryant triggered a 17-7 run to start the second half, scoring six points apiece in the burst that opened a 64-44 advantage with 5:47 remaining in the third quarter.

Vancouver never cut the deficit below double digits and trailed by as 27 points at 90-63 with 4:40 left in the contest following a layup by Rick Fox.

Fox finished with 14 points as the Lakers shot 44 percent (41-of-93).
