Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jason Terry can do more than just fill it up. He can dish it out, too.

The emerging second-year guard had 17 points, eight rebounds and a career-high 13 assists, lifting the Atlanta Hawks to an 85-74 victory over the Chicago Bulls in a battle between the Eastern Conference's worst teams.

Terry has displayed his scoring prowess of late, moving to shooting guard and leading the Hawks' offense in six of the previous nine games. Although he was once again tops in the points column, the 6-2, 172-pounder from Arizona also was instrumental in getting his teammates involved tonight.

"Jason has a great attitude and is very positive," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "Terry is a threat all the time out there. If he couldn't get his shot, he created good looks for other guys. He didn't shoot very well (6-of-18) but passed the ball and that made it up."

With Atlanta clinging to a 66-64 lead, Terry fed Matt Maloney for a 21-footer and Roshown McLeod for another jumper before making a layup himself to cap a 10-2 run that gave Atlanta a 76-66 lead with 1:40 to play.

"Early on, as I was penetrating, I was drawing three and four guys," Terry said. "In the second half, I was able to find Ro (McLeod) and Maloney when that happened. That is how I was able to get the others involved."

Maloney scored 14 points and Dikembe Mutombo added 12 and 18 rebounds for the Hawks, who avenged a 91-82 home loss to the Bulls on November 30. Mutombo bounced back nicely from a blowout loss at Detroit on Tuesday, when he was held scoreless in 19 minutes before fouling out.

"I think of lot of that had to do with our disappointing performance against Detroit," Mutombo said. "Everyone was not happy with themselves. We felt we let ourselves and our coaches down and wanted to do better."

Ron Mercer scored 22 points for the Bulls, who failed to build on Wednesday's 104-86 blowout win at Boston, their largest margin of victory in the post-Michael Jordan era.

Alan Henderson scored 12 points and McLeod, who was activated from the injured list earlier today, and Lorenzen Wright added 10 apiece for the Hawks, who shot 37 percent (29-of-79) but held a 54-42 rebounding advantage.

Elton Brand had 19 points and 12 rebounds and rookie Khalid El-Amin added 12 points and six assists for the Bulls, who shot 35 percent (28-of-81) and committed just nine turnovers.

The game featured 12 lead changes and six ties but turned in Atlanta's favor late in the third quarter. Brand made a pair of free throws to give Chicago a 55-53 lead with 3:39 left but McLeod made a seven-foot hook shot and Wright scored on consecutive trips to put Atlanta in front for good, 59-54.

The Bulls cut the deficit to two points on three separate occasions thereafter but Terry used his passing and scoring to make sure they would get no closer down the stretch.

"It was a total team effort," Terry said. "The others stepped up and made the plays. In the fourth quarter, we got what we wanted. We talked in the middle of the huddle, saying we needed to execute. We went out and isolated 1-on-1, ran some clock and got the shots we wanted."

"(Terry) is extremely quick and had been playing very well coming in here," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "We tried to put some length on him. Ron Mercer did a good job for the most part. For the minutes when Ron was not out there, he made us pay."
