Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Rookie Kenyon Martin's follow shot with 30 seconds remaining ignited a game-ending 7-0 spurt as the New Jersey Nets posted an 89-83 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, their second straight win.

After Martin's basket gave New Jersey an 84-83 lead, Stephon Marbury completed a three-point play and Aaron Williams hit a pair from the line to close it out.

"I was going to the offensive glass the whole game but it just wasn't falling the way I wanted it to fall," said Martin, who finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. "It finally fell my way."

Marbury scored 23 points and Kendall Gill added 19 for the Nets, who snapped a 10-game losing streak in Atlanta. Gill returned after sitting out four games with a sore knee.

"I thought the guys did a good job the second half," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "I got on them a little in the first half. I thought they were real lackadaisical. We didn't come out ready to play and compete. They were outrebounding us two to one. We didn't pass the ball around. We stood around a lot. In the third and fourth quarter, we got more aggressive and that's what it takes."

Atlanta outrebounded New Jersey, 46-35, with Lorenzen Wright grabbing 13 and Dikembe Mutombo 12.

But the Nets, who recently snapped a nine-game losing streak have benefited from having Marbury back in the lineup. The point guard is averaging 25 points in two games since returning from a sprained ankle.

"Right now, I'm just playing good basketball," Marbury said. "That's all we're really worrying about. It doesn't really matter who we're going up against. Every team in the NBA is a good team. On any given night, they can kick your butt by 30."

The Hawks opened a 44-32 lead late in the second quarter but missed an opportunity to win consecutive games for the first time this season. Atlanta was coming off an 85-74 victory at Chicago on Friday.

"This game kind of lets us know we are right there," Wright said. "It was a hard-fought battle, they just came out on top."

Roshown McLeod and Mutombo scored 15 points apiece for the Hawks, who took their final lead, 83-82, on Jason Terry's 3-pointer with 43 seconds to go.

New Jersey committed only eight turnovers while converting 20 Atlanta miscues into 23 points.

"We didn't take care of the ball," Hawks guard Matt Maloney said. "We had a lot of turnovers that turned into easy baskets for them. We were trying to make a run to get back-to-back wins."

New Jersey opened a 76-71 lead on Williams' tip-in with 8:09 to play before the Hawks scored five straight points to tie it on McLeod's 12-footer with 6:22 to play.

A 14-footer by Johnny Newman gave the Nets an 82-78 lead with 2:06 remaining before the Hawks made their final run. Wright's layup with 1:48 left and Terry's 3-pointer gave Atlanta its 83-82 lead.

But after Martin's dunk, Terry committed a crucial turnover, leading to Marbury's three-point play. Atlanta had another turnover on its next possession and Williams clinched the victory at the line.

"One missed rebound and one turnover -- that was the ballgame," Terry said. "I had a shot, I should have taken it. Even if I would have missed it, it would have been better than throwing it away. If I had to do it again, I'd shoot the ball."

New Jersey closed the second quarter with a 9-2 spurt, pulling within 46-41 at the half. Gill's 15-footer with 10 seconds left in the third quarter gave the Nets a 68-67 lead entering the final period.
