Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Although he was left out of the flow for most of the final quarter, Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki is learning that there are times when a star must step up.

Nowitzki drilled a 3-pointer with 66 seconds left and added a pair of free throws 10 seconds later as the Dallas Mavericks posted a 99-90 triumph over the Detroit Pistons.

The third-year forward from Germany had a career-high 36 points Friday and scored 20 through three quarters tonight. Teammates Steve Nash and Christian Laettner provided the offense for the opening 11 minutes of the final period before Nowitzki stepped up when Detroit drew close.

The lead was shaved to 89-88 following the second of two free throws by Detroit's Joe Smith with 1:51 to go. But Nowitzki came off a screen by Laettner and buried a 3-pointer to extend the lead to four. His two free throws made it 94-88 with 56 seconds to play.

"That three was a huge three," Pistons coach George Irvine said. "It was a great screen set by Christian. Joe tried to get there and Nowitzki buried a big shot."

"I just took the shot, I was wide open and I took it," Nowitzki said.

But Mavericks coach Don Nelson revealed there was a little more to Nowitzki's clutch play.

"We didn't even know if he could play," Nelson admitted. "He has been ill. He got sick on the plane ride and had not eaten until right before the game. I didn't know how much energy he would have, but he was able to play a lot more minutes than I ever thought and still had enough to make that big shot."

"I was sick yesterday and had a stomach flu," Nowitzki said. "It was good today, I took a lot of medicine yesterday and I felt fine. It was a tough game, Detroit is a tough team to beat, especially at home. I thought we did a great job on defense, that was the key."

Nash and Laettner, a former Piston, scored 16 points apiece for Dallas, which is 16-4 this season when holding opponents under 100 points.

"There is always a little extra when you come back and play one of your former teams," Laettner said. "You just want to make sure you come out, play hard and give your team a chance to win."

Jerry Stackhouse scored 24 points while Smith, who entertained thoughts of joining the Mavericks earlier this season, had 20 and a season-high 13 rebounds.

The lead seesawed back and forth in the fourth quarter but Dallas was able to open an 89-84 advantage on a goaltending call against Ben Wallace with 3:36 to go. Dana Barros hit a 17-footer for Detroit with 2:24 left and Smith sank his two free throws 33 seconds later.

Detroit had a 5-4 lead but Dallas reeled off the next 11 points as Nowitzki buried a pair of 3-pointers. When Detroit got within 19-13 with under four minutes left in the quarter, Nowitzki sank another 3-pointer to ignite an 8-0 spurt.

Nowitzki had 11 in the opening quarter as Dallas held a 37-22 edge after 12 minutes. The lead was 40-24 following Nash's 3-pointer four minutes into the second quarter but Detroit responded with an 18-5 burst that got them within three with 1:54 to go.

Chucky Atkins scored 14 points and Stackhouse 12 for the Pistons, who were within 47-45 at the half despite shooting just 35 percent (15-of-43) from the field.

Detroit carried the momentum over to the second half, scoring the first eight points of the third quarter. Smith had the first five points before Stackhouse sank a 3-pointer for a 53-47 edge with 8:19 to go.

Wallace had 10 rebounds and four blocks for Detroit, which held a 45-36 rebounding edge.

Dallas made 10-of-24 3-pointers and 17-of-18 free throws.
