Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse showed how much he means to the Detroit Pistons. Jason Kidd did not show how much he means to the Phoenix Suns.

Stackhouse scored 35 points to lift the Pistons to an 89-84 victory over the slumping Suns, who were without the injured Kidd and lost their season-high third straight game.

The NBA's second-leading scorer, Stackhouse made just 11-of-28 shots. But he scored 13 points in the pivotal third quarter, made a key 3-pointer to repel a rally in the final period and sank the clinching free throws with 12 seconds left.

"When it came down to the last stages, we made some key plays and at the same time got some key spots," Stackhouse said.

One of the best all-around players in the game, Kidd was a late scratch with a sore back and left knee. He was replaced in the starting lineup by recent signee Elliot Perry.

"He wasn't going to go, then he was going to go, but I told him not to go," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "He has had a lot of minutes and is struggling with his injuries right now."

Making his first start of the season, Perry scored a season-high 18 points but provided little of the leadership the Suns are used to from Kidd, who led the club to a 15-8 mark entering tonight.

"We don't feel sorry for nobody," Stackhouse said. "We played without guys who can help us win, too. That's the NBA."

"That was a good win for us," Pistons coach George Irvine said. "We had to compete hard. Them not having Jason Kidd obviously hurts them a great deal, but I don't care."

Chucky Atkins and Joe Smith scored 14 points apiece for Detroit, which snapped a two-game skid as it began a two-game road swing that continues in Denver on Wednesday.

Clifford Robinson scored 21 points and Rodney Rogers added 19 off the bench for Phoenix, which has dropped two in a row at home after a 10-1 start at America West Arena.

During their losing streak, the Suns have lost their shooting touch, managing under 35 percent (92-of-266) from the field. Forward Shawn Marion has been particularly guilty, making just 4-of-26 shots.

Tonight, the Suns shot under 37 percent (31-of-84) and Marion was 1-of-10.

"I have never been a person with a confidence problem, yet I know it exists," Skiles said. "We do a lot of shooting at practice. Right now we are going through a period of time where we aren't shooting the ball well. Our execution wasn't the greatest. We hoisted up some shots we normally wouldn't want to take."

That was evident in the third quarter, when the Suns had seven turnovers and six baskets. The Pistons took full advantage, using a 13-0 run to help turn a 47-47 halftime tie into a 76-62 lead entering the final period. Stackhouse had seven baskets by himself.

"We kind of packed it in and made them shoot from the outside and that's something they've been struggling with a little bit lately," Stackhouse said.

Phoenix fought back and got within 80-74 with 5:05 remaining on a basket by Ruben Garces, who was activated from the injured list earlier in the day. Stackhouse responded with a 3-pointer 14 seconds later.

Consecutive 3-pointers by Marion -- who missed his first nine shots -- and Robinson cut the deficit to 87-84 with 43 seconds to go and Robinson had a very good look at a potential tying 3-pointer. But he missed and Stackhouse made two free throws to seal it.

Ben Wallace collected 10 points and 14 rebounds and Smith had 13 boards for the Pistons, who shot just 38 percent (31-of-81) but made 24-of-26 free throws and held a 55-42 edge on the glass.
