Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Roshown McLeod and Jason Terry helped do in their former coach.

McLeod and Terry keyed a decisive fourth-quarter run as the Atlanta Hawks won consecutive games for the first time this season, a 78-72 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens was coaching against the Hawks for the first time since being forced out after last season. The NBA's all-time winningest coach, Wilkens compiled a 310-232 record in seven seasons with Atlanta. His only losing campaign came last season, when the Hawks slumped to a 28-54 mark.

"We wanted to win the game. Not necessarily for Lenny, but against a team we could beat," Raptors point guard Mark Jackson said. "We didn't play well at all, for whatever reason."

McLeod and Terry helped do in their former coach, combining for all the points in a game-ending 18-8 spurt over the final 9:22. McLeod scored 11 points and Terry seven in the burst.

McLeod and Terry each scored 19 points for the Hawks, who have won three of their last four games. Atlanta has gone 7-8 since opening the season with a dismal 1-10 mark.

"As a team we are learning to compete better and get a better feel for the game situation," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "The losing is frustrating but the guys remained focus."

It also was a big game for Hawks center Dikembe Mutombo, who finished with 20 rebounds and eight blocks. The 20 rebounds were three shy of matching Ben Wallace of Detroit and Tim Duncan of San Antonio for the most in a game this season.

Vince Carter scored 20 points and handed out 10 assists for Toronto, which fell to 3-17 all-time against the Hawks.

Looking to win for the fifth time in their last seven games, the Raptors had a 64-60 lead with 9:22 remaining after a 20-footer by Charles Oakley, who finished with eight points and 16 rebounds.

But McLeod caught fire for the Hawks, scoring his club's next nine points to give Atlanta the lead for good, 69-68 with 5:44 to play. Terry's 3-pointer from the left sideline with just over four minutes left provided a four-point lead.

McLeod, who often guarded one of the most explosive players in the league in Carter, was not distracted on the offensive end and made 8-of-12 shots from the field in 40 minutes.

"We had a good game plan on Vince Carter," McLeod said. "We knew he would get his points but wanted to take a lot of shots for him to do it. We put two on him all game and forced the rest of the team to beat us."

A pair of free throws by Oakley helped the Raptors pull within 72-70 with 3:03 left but that was as close as they would get. Toronto went cold down the stretch and did score again until Carter made a layup with 14 seconds left.

Toronto was cold from much of the night and shot just 36 percent (33-of-93). The Hawks were not that much better and shot 39.5 percent (32-of-81).

Carter, who scored 45 points in Wednesday's overtime victory at Indiana, made 9-of-19 shots from the floor and also grabbed seven rebounds.

Terry scored 12 points in the first half as the Hawks built a 38-31 lead. The Raptors shot an abysmal 30 percent (15-of-49) in the half.
