Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers' 1-2 punch once again was too much to handle for the Dallas Mavericks.

Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal both had big games and the Lakers nearly squandered a big lead before holding on for a 108-103 victory over the Mavericks.

The NBA's leading scorer, Bryant had another huge game, scoring 35 points on 12-of-20 shooting while making all 10 free throws. Coming off a 45-point effort at Houston on Thursday, Bryant is averaging 29.8 points this season.

Dallas coach Don Nelson had nothing but praise for Bryant.

"We're seeing a very special player in Kobe Bryant," he said. "We've seen them all and at this particular time, he is the best player in the league. I know he has all those comparisons with Micahel Jordan, but at this stage of his career at his age, I've never seen a player better."

Although not as good as Bryant tonight, O'Neal, the NBA's reigning Most Valuable Player, finished with 28 points and nine assists.

The Mavericks are developing their own 1-2 punch with emerging Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley. Nowitzki scored 29 points and Finley 22 but could not prevent the Mavericks losing for the 20th time in their last 21 meetings with the Lakers.

"I think it was a great effort. It's always a big game when the defending champions come in," Nowitzki said. "They bring a lot of hype with them. They knew we were going after them and they came ready to play in the first half."

Bryant scored 21 points in the first half as the Lakers built a 61-41 advantage before nearly letting the lead slip away in the second half.

Finley made two free throws with 59 seconds left to help the Mavs close to 102-100. But Bryant and Robert Horry each made a pair from the line to give Los Angeles a six-point bulge with 29 seconds remaining.

Trying to complete a perfect four-game road trip, the defending NBA champion Lakers did not look anything like a team playing for the third time in the last four nights.

Bryant and O'Neal combined to score the Lakers' first 13 points of the second quarter as they opened a 42-31 advantage with just over seven minutes to play. The lead grew to 61-41 with nine seconds to play before intermission on a 20-footer by O'Neal.

O'Neal dominated in the paint, making 9-of-14 shots. He could have had an even bigger game but the 37 percent free throw shooter went 10-of-20 from the line.

"We're tired but we're doing OK," O'Neal said. "We've had a pretty good road trip. We had a couple of close ones but we did what we had to do to get the win."

Undeterred by the big deficit, the improving Mavericks tried to get back in the game by starting the third quarter on a 14-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Howard Eisley that pulled them within 63-55.

But the Lakers rebounded from the Mavs' spurt and a layup by O'Neal provided a 73-57 advantage with 3:18 left in the quarter. Los Angeles held an 80-68 lead entering the final period.

Nowitzki, emerging as one of the top young players in the league, began to catch fire in the fourth quarter and helped the Mavericks again get back into it.

He scored 14 points in the final 12 minutes, including a pair of free throws to help the Mavs close to 97-93 with 2:17 remaining. A 3-pointer by Hubert Davis with 1:35 left shave the deficit to 100-98.

But showing their mettle, the Lakers made the plays down the stretch. Bryant provided the biggest shot after Davis made his 3-pointer, answering with a 20-foot turnaround on the ensuing trip.

The Lakers made their free throws in crunch time, hitting 6-of-7 from the line over the final 45 seconds as they matched a season high with their fifth straight win.

Rick Fox added 15 points for Los Angeles, which shot 53.5 percent (38-of-71) and held a commanding 50-30 rebounding advantage.

Steve Nash netted 18 points and Eisley 16 for the Mavericks, who shot 44 percent (37-of-83) and committed just five turnovers.

The five turnovers were one shy of matching a club record, established on two other occasions with the last coming in a game against Houston on November 12, 1991.
