Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Having finally come together, the Denver Nuggets tore apart the Portland Trail Blazers.

Antonio McDyess and Nick Van Exel scored 29 points apiece as the Nuggets matched a season high with their fourth straight win, a 116-96 thumping of the Trail Blazers.

Just 10 days ago, the Nuggets were on the verge of a mutiny as the players boycotted a practice following an 0-4 road trip. They followed with a setback to Miami but have not lost since, winning at San Antonio and Houston and edging Detroit at home before tonight.

"We have a lot of confidence right now," Nuggets guard George McCloud said. "That whole little incident has brought us together."

"In the locker room, everyone is positive and we're together, not in groups," Van Exel said.

Denver exploded for a season high in points, shooting 52 percent (45-of-86) as it never trailed and climbed above .500 for the first time since December 6.

"That was nice, to have a laugher for a change," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "That was an awful good team we just beat. We're starting to feed on the success that we are having."

Van Exel made 10-of-17 shots and handed out 11 assists as he thoroughly outplayed Damon Stoudamire. He scored 18 points in the first half as the Nuggets opened a 62-50 lead.

"We came out and set the tone early," Van Exel said. "We were aggressive and it carried over for four quarters. Stoudamire is definitely a good guard, we just have different rules. I have a better chance to go after him."

McDyess made 11-of-17 shots and pulled down 11 rebounds as he held his own against Portland All-Star forward Rasheed Wallace. He scored 12 points in the third quarter, when Denver widened the lead to 22 points.

"From the beginning, we came out and played hard," McDyess said. "We got the lead up to 10 and we took care of business. Hopefully by beating Portland, this will be a message to the rest of the league that we are a good team."

The Trail Blazers suffered their second-worst loss of the season and appeared to get the message.

"Disaster, disaster, disaster," Stoudamire said. "Van Exel played great, McDyess played great and it was a disaster."

Wallace scored 27 points and Scottie Pippen added a season-high 21 for the Blazers, who shot just 41 percent (35-of-86).

Two free throws by Wallace had Portland within 43-40 with 4:05 left in the second quarter when Denver retaliated with a 13-0 run. After McDyess made two free throws, Voshon Lenard had a 3-pointer and three-point play, Van Exel made a 3-pointer and McDyess put home a layup for a 56-40 lead with 2:30 to go.

The Nuggets raced to a 62-50 halftime lead and stunned Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy.

"We didn't do a good job defensively," he said. "They had 18 fast-break points in the first half. We don't give that up in multiple games."

In the third quarter, the Nuggets decreased the tempo but still increased the lead.

A three-point play by Steve Smith with 8:17 left had the Blazers within 70-62 -- the only time the deficit was at single digits. James Posey made two free throws and a jumper and Van Exel added a short jumper to rebuild the lead to 76-62 with 6:39 remaining.

Van Exel made a 3-pointer and McCloud sank two foul shots before finding McDyess for an alley-oop dunk and a 91-71 lead with 49 seconds to go.

Posey scored 13 points and Lenard added 11 for the Nuggets, who had six players in double figures.

Portland's Shawn Kemp returned from a one-game benching for missing a practice and scored six points on 2-of-9 shooting.
